Married gay couple looking to move to SC at the end of January 2023. Never been there before looking for any helpful information we can find. Thanks in advance.
Be honest everyone for these people. South Carolina is conservative and traditional, gay marriage is still not accepted by many as well as all the transgender mess. People are polite here, but they don't approve of your gay marriage or people changing their genders. Most people won't yell or make a remark about you, but most don't approve of that here in the southeast.
In SC’s cities it’s live and let live on LGBTQ issues. It’s even live and let live with the majority of the population in the state’s rural places. Too many of our GOP legislators haven’t been hit hard enough with that reality, yet. Give it a minute. We’re more purple than we get credit for on social issues in SC. Too many kooks still have the floor, but again, wait a minute.
I agree with data-traitor on this. SC is very tolerant of different lifestyles and always has been. You can find idiots on both sides of an issue (like the time my wife and I were insulted and told we were not welcome at an AIDS fundraiser by an apparently impaired young man who was quickly removed from the event) but mature people know how to block people like this out and understand they don’t speak for the majority.
To me tolerance does not mean you have to endorse something you don’t agree with, it means that you and those you disagree with can live and work side by side respectfully.
South Carolina is a helluva welcoming place. Come on down and see for yourself.
