My 23 year old, single, professional daughter is moving to Columbia, SC and will be working close to the airport. She is looking for a suggestion on where to live (in an apartment) that would be fun (but safe) for a single female. She is out of college but still likes the nightlife (bars, restaurants, shops etc). I (being the dad) have heard about Five Points and the Vista but was concerned about safety.. are those safe places to live? any thoughts?

I'd pick the Vista over Five Points. Five Points can get a bit rowdy since it largely caters to the college crowd; the Vista is more tame yet is still active and entertaining.

They're a thousand or more per month. Check out the Pavilion, Capitol Places, Claire Towers and Cornell Arms for a range in low to high amenities and convenience, just to get your bearings, and go from there, checking out the weekly news rags, The State newspaper and word-of-mouth sources.

Thank you so much... Those will be the first places on my list. Would you consider the "the Vista" a safe place to live?

Yes, the Vista is generally considered to be a safe area.

She definitely does not want to live around Five Points. There have been 4 shootings there this past year, though the city is trying to figure out to improve security / safety in the area.

Yes, I work and go out in the Vista area and it is safe. I consider Five Points to be safe, also, you have to consider the tens of thousands of people that frequent Five Points every week and any time you have that many people somewhere there will be occasional trouble. I have no qualms about going to dinner or out in Five Points, but frequent the Vista more often. She is older than college age so the Vista would work for her.

She probably wouldn't be hanging out in the shadows at 3 a.m. in the hood a few blocks from Five Points where the shootings have taken place either.
