The House Authority will help the current residents find somewhere else to live.

Things are looking good for downtown Columbus.

Good cause even as a little kid I thought it was dumb and bad-looking to have BTW there!

This redevelopment is going to do great things for that area. Hopefully the project moves forward quickly.

Redevelopment Set to Begin on BTW Apartments

The Housing Authority has awarded tax credits for the first phase of the redevelopment for Booker T. Washington apartments.

The first phase will consist of 100 units of housing for older persons at the site of the vacant Chapman Homes community. When the new apartments are completed, eligible residents will be relocated to the new community.

The 2nd phase will consist of demolishing half of the existing apartments and developing 100 units of housing for families at the existing site.

A 3rd phase will consist of demolishing the rest of the apartments making way for potential commercial development along the intersection of Veterans Parkway and Victory Drive.

Construction of phase I should commence in late 2014 or early 2015 with completion and occupancy in late 2015 or early 2016.

The redevelopment of Booker T. Washington is possible because of the collaborative efforts of HACG, developer partner Columbia Residential Inc. and the Columbus Consolidated Government.

Glad to see this move forward. Even though I think the land is better suited for something else, it will definitely make the area better looking.

You get rid of the dead wood - watch the tree burst with new growth..... I seriously doubt that will happen as needed, between certain influential people who can't help but see racism in everything done involving poor minorities, and it being a government job vs the private sector, but this single change could reshape that entire intersection/end of Veterans parkway and could really re-invigorate South Commons.

Think about it, you change up BTW and through redevelopment and investment the entire area between Veterans and the river would change over the next 10 years. We could be looking at another minor league team or something of the like within 10 years.

This is definitely a game changer for that area of downtown. However, I do think there is a higher and better use for the property. What they have planned will spruce up the area. Definitely better than doing nothing. Like I've said all along, 2014 is going to be a huge year for Columbus and the metro.

Also glad to see Columbia Residential doing the project. They have done a lot of good revitalization projects in Atlanta. Very curious to see how the commercial portion of this project unfolds. Such a great location.
