Columbus is a nice place but why does Columbus look and feel smaller than Augusta, Macon and Savannah? (Particularly Savannah and Macon, since its population is way larger). What is Columbus planning to do to make the city gain more "urban" characteristics in the future? I'm just asking because the sleepy feel might shock or even turn away people who just arent into "slow paced" life.

...or is this just a Columbus thing and Columbus natives want and choose to maintain the small town feel?

You have different grades of people in society with some who can excel in their trade while others are indifferent and are satisfied with being just average or less as is the case with Columbus.
The southern half of Georgia will never rise above this state of mind no matter what they do.
Peculiar?
As the old saying goes a nod is as good as a wink to a blind horse.

Okie dokey. But, be advised, us slow, po ignorant folks down here in the South ain't gonna ever git it. Wees gonna keep moseying along being indifferent. Whilst you smart edumacated folks in North GA (still in GA) change the South. Yep, that's what wees gonna do. Written by a average +< average blind horse engineering geek in Columbus.

That's a new one on me that Columbus is south Georgia......Albany, Valdosta, and Brunswick are South GA, not Columbus.

I think you may have read my post incorrectly as I was speaking of South Georgia as a whole although Columbus is still considered to be in the southern half of the state by most Georgians.
This is new to you?

I see now, thanks for clarifying.

I think most people see Columbus as middle Georgia along with Macon.

As someone who travels a lot for work, I find this interesting... how different people view different places. In my opinion, the "slow paced" life as you call it, is a desirable trait that Macon and Savannah lack!! I think Columbus exceeds the others in regards to the, as you put it, "urban" characteristics. I am not sure if it is the foresight they had when planning the downtown area (i.e. wide streets, large sidewalk areas), or all the work they have done recently, but as far as an urban feel, I get it much more in Columbus than I do in either Macon or Savannah.
