I live in Phenix City.

*Taxes & Retirement: Alabama wins
*Schools: Auburn (definitely, but too far to drive, Columbus (certain schools is next), Phenix City & Lee County schools are not as bad as people make them out to be. We do have successful people who graduated from these schools. My children went to/are going to the Lee County Schools (Smiths Station). By the way, with the BRAC Realignment....all of the area schools are going to be overcrowded.
*Home Prices: Phenix City wins...the only good place to live in Columbus is the north side & you will pay a lot to live there. You can save $10,000 or more just on the price alone (same house) by living in Phenix City over Columbus...this does not count the property tax savings.

What I like about Phenix City is that we have what we need in Phenix City...and it's just five minutes to cross the Chattahoochee to get to Columbus when you have to go. You may have to drive a little further to get to Fort Benning, but you won't have as much traffic....basically, the same time frame. It certainly wouldn't be like living in Atlanta & trying to get to work.

When will people stop making this bad generalized statement? There are some very nice areas in South and East Columbus. Quail Creek in South Columbus comes to mind and there are others. Although I do not live in South Columbus and I chose to live elsewhere I am aware that there are some bad places located throughout the geographical area of Columbus (north, south east and west). And as an Auburn grad who loves Auburn University, I'm here to tell you that there are few bad spots in the city of Auburn as well. My advice come down and check things out. If you have children, then you would most likely enjoy living in Columbus, there's just more available for them to do. If you do not have children, then Russel or Chattahoochee counties are your best bet. Chattahoochee would be the cheapest by far.

Maybe that was a "bad generalized statement," but I know if I was moving to Columbus....I would be looking in North Columbus or Harris County. Like you said, if you don't have children, then you can move into the rural areas outside of Columbus.

I live right off of exit 12 in Columbus. It's 15-20 minutes to get to the gate at Ft. Benning, and I'm always parked at the hospital in less than 25 minutes unless there is a problem at the gate.

Perception of traffic all depends on where you are coming from. When I commuted 7 miles to Camp Lejeune, I had to allow 40 minutes, and sometimes that commute took an hour and a half. For my 16 mile drive here, it's never more than 25.

Really, compared to Atlanta, the travel time and actual miles from one side of Phenix City to the other side of Columbus is no more than a few minutes at any time. More than travelling between two cities, it is more like an Eastside (Columbus) and a Westside (Phenix City) and perhaps Fort Benning could be considered the Southside of both.

Work the numbers on tax on not just your pension, but wage and salary income, property taxes; Lee Co or Auburn schools, and commuting time for you. Then look at the school quality vs your/son's academic and future college aspirations. You'll probably have to make a decision on (Auburn vs North Columbus) schools, taxes, and commuting cost. Note that Auburn is at least 25 miles further than Columbus and 20 miles further than Smiths Station; via some marginal Lee County roads. At a modest .35 per mile commuting cost, that would add up to $14 a day times say, 225 work days per year, $3,150 per year more for Auburn. And you can't deduct commuting cost from your income tax like property taxes. I would take a hard look at all numbers. including slowed up commuting time due to the increasing congestion at US 280 and US 80, take an even harder look at the academics, what your housing aspirations happen to be, and what is available. Consider that no matter what you see today, BRAC will be creating heavy housing demand in the next 14 months. Then put your feet on the ground here for a couple of days. But by all means do not let a real estate salesperson stampede you into buying anywhere. Good Luck!

Hi, I would like to move to Phenix City, Alabama to join my boyfriend who lives there but commutes to work in Columbus, Georgia. Do you have any suggestions for generating some income in those areas? Thanks!

Depends on what kind of experience that you have. Where have you worked in the past?

Nice boost for sweet home Alabama.

Really, as I've written before, most of East Alabama is virtually the same as being in Georgia as far as travel times.
