So you have to have black people to be considered a real city.

You don't worry about physical crime in the Polaris area like you do in the lower income areas like Whitehall or the Hilltop area. The crime comes from those that see where the money is, and they come and rob the people, steal from the stores, and then go back to their lair.

There's nothing but black people at Easton at night. The place is fine to go to during the day, but at night, most white people avoid it. No one wants to be around loud kids thinking they're the next T.I. or Michael Jordan. They, the black kids, walk 2 miles an hour around the mall 6 wide with their winter coats half off, pants sagging at their knees, ball caps croooked, churning out lyrics about weed or busting caps.

The white people keep going further and further north to get away from that. How about we do video tours of the nice neighborhoods of Westerville/Polaris/Hilltop/Whitehall. And then, a video of the bad neighborhoods of Westerville/Polaris/Hilltop/Whitehall.

Cultured cities are trashed, dirty, and there's crime x 50. I'll stick with cookie-cutter suburbia.

Yes Hitler--Lets get rid of all the black people, Muslims, Jews, Somali's, Latinos, Europeans, Asians, the poor, the obese, and the homosexuals. Only the white, blue eyed, Americans get to share this city with you.

Namely, Sylvester The Cat-----"AHHHHHH SHADAPPPP!!!"

Lord, it's 2010 already...can we please get rid of 6th grade nonsensical thinking like this once and for all?

Sir, for what it's worth, please do the rest of us a favor and stay in your cookie-cutter suburb, peering fearfully from behind your drawn blinds and triple-locked doors, ready to slap some silly label on anyone who's different (or in this case darker) than you?

In case you haven't noticed (or if someone has tried to tell you and you ran away with your fingers stuck in your ears, singing lalalalala I can't heeeeaaar you) not every member of the black race (or any race other than yours, for the sake of argument) is either a wanna-be rapper, NBA/NFL star, philandering golfer, multiple baby daddy, or pea-brained, gun toting, thugged-out baboon!

You seem to have your head stuck in one of two very uncomfortable places: either a huge sandbox full of outdated BS stereotypes, or, as my old Drill Sarge used to say, 'your third point of contact'...So there are black folks at Easton and Polaris at night---to which I ask, so bloody what? Three of those people just might be me, my college-educated wife (with 2 Masters degrees!!), and my wonderful 82-year-old mother-in-law...and if you start running around Polaris/Easton waving your arms and shouting 'THE NEGROES ARE COMING! THE NEGROES ARE COMING! RUN FOR YOUR LIVES!' because we just happened to ignore the invisible 'Whites Only' signs, then tough tooter, son... you're more than welcome to run a 9.2 100-meter sprint getting to your car, peeling rubber, and hauling your scared tuckus back to Cookiecutterland, while my family and I continue to enjoy our evening...

What's my main point, you ask? It's simple----I'm sorry if the presence of black folks or any of the others that Coach123 listed in his reply to you, gives you a case of the hives, and makes Columbus one of those 'dirty, trashy, cultured, crime-ridden cities' you loathe...last time I looked, you don't make the rules, you don't run anything, and you can take your ball and go home and suck your thumb because those dirty ol' people have the audacity to want to come to your vanilla playground and not stay in the ghetto (where, quiet as it's kept, a lot of decent hard-working folk live and WANT TO GET OUT OF!!!)...

It's 2010---quit buying into all these ancient myths, and try INTERACTING with people different than yourself sometimes...you may be surprised at what you find, unless you're more comfortable sitting behind your keyboard, and your blinds and locked doors, mouthing negatives and dissing folks you may never have had contact with

People like you are the reason I left Columbus--ignorant, hateful and tremendously misinformed.

This is a sudden move based on family issues and I don't feel that I can be too choosey, yet I don't want to settle for anything if I don't have to. We're from Chicago, this is where I was born and raised. We complain about it sometimes but I suspect our mass transit system is one of the best, I do know many people still who've never owned a car including myself. I got my drivers license months back anticipating this move to another state where the transportation may not be as good. I've been renting cars presently. We don't have much money, we live in a decent 1bedroom APT on the near westside. My real concerns about making a sudden move is going from bad to worse or jumping from the frying pan into the fire. I'm gathering info on Columbus but I know there is much more I need to know. WHAT I NEED: Can't afford to live in the most ritziest areas or apartments in Columbus but I'm hoping I can find a decent apartment that is in a decent neighborhood not completely overwhelmed by slums or crime. There are (2) apartments I'm interested in, one is on the near east side (Whitehall) it's only 4 to 6 miles from Port Columbus Airport, the area didn't look too bad to me and there seemed to be a fair amount of businesses and restaurants near the apartment and it's on south Hamilton Rd. The other apartment complex is on north Wilson Rd. and there seems to be a decent amount of places to shop. My research consists of Google Maps and Google Earth as far as getting a feel for the area. I plan to visit these areas soon before I make my final decision, it's tough when you've never lived in a place. I've only passed through Ohio headed to Virginia on Greyhound. Can someone who knows these areas help? A touchy subject is race, I do not want to offend anyone I just want to be honest. Me and my mother are black, the only example I can give is that being a Chicagoan I have an idea of the more racist areas to avoid and I have no idea about Columbus, Ohio. Most post I've read seem to be positive about race relations in Columbus. I even examined the racial info in the zip codes. The (Whitehall) zip 43213 appears a bit more diverse than the (Valleyview) zip 43204, I think the neighborhood is called Greater Hilltop in Valleyview. I would appreciate help from anyone black or white who knows these areas. Thanks So Much.
My opinion on what I have observed since living here. (moved here three years ago)
Terrible air quality. Since I've been here, I've had sinus, allergy and asthma issues. Race is not an issue, but I noticed a lot of (not all) Caucasian women that dates African American men here, hates African American women and treats them like crap when they're wanting jobs that they are working (and yes this is discrimination) Terrible crappy unprofessional customer service in almost all of the places I call daily. Just today, called walmart to get product information. The operator working at the location was very unprofessional quoting "yea" after asked to be transferred to a particular department.

It's very crowded. Especially around the holidays.

On the other end, it multicultural.

The other non American cultures are very secluded, no one seems to interact out side of their race except Caucasians with African Americans. Unless they are working with them.

I was forced to moved to Whitehall from Dayton, Ohio due to "lack of funds" when moving here. Three months after finding a (temp service job [which was a joke]) while working without benefits, a crack user robbed me. I fell into depression afterwards. My health went bad (acid reflux disease, asthma.... ) with NO INSURANCE (which this happened in the year of 2007) nor work benefits to help with my suffering. Please try to get more money to come here, location really does matter.

When getting here! Make sure to eat perfect and exercise daily due to the air quality (according to the asthma capital of 2009 list by the asthma and allergy foundation of America, Columbus ranks 27 out of 100 with 1 starting the worst air quality and 100 being better )

Hope this helps a little!
Good Luck to you!

Hello I just moved to Columbus. I am not sure what your work situation is like however where you decide to live will depend upon where you get a job. For example, if you get a job in downtown Columbus then living in an area that is 20-30 minutes away may be a long commute if you are not used to driving. Columbus is a great city. It is very diverse and it has many great areas to live in.
