Yeah, plus sometimes you can't download anything because the offending virus/malware won't allow it. Best thing is to have something good and keep it updated so nothing gets by you.

Possibly another thing to do is to run restore if you had to.

If you ever get a malware, it helps (in my opinion) to have a little program called KeyScrambler. That way certain kinds of crap cannot copy your keystrokes.

Thanks for all the advice. I think I finally fixed the problem. For the last few days I have been trying to start up my computer in safe mode, but everything on my desktop was hidden, so I couldn't do anything. But a few hours ago I tried it again in safe mode and suddenly all of my desktop icons showed up. Not sure why it worked today and not any of the other times that I tried it. But anyways, I was able to log on to the internet and download malwarebytes anti-malware. Everything seems to be working fine now.

Could be a corrupt profile, could be the icons have the 'hidden' attribute set (if so, definitely check for rootkits using TDSS Killer or ASWMBR), or it could be that it wasn't loading the explorer shell. Were you getting the start-button at the bottom?

Akwart, now that you have sampled a taste of having no PC and possibly losing whatever data you had being lost permanently, how will you prepare for the next disaster which will come sooner or later?

Do you know Bruce Willis' motto in the movie The Last Boys Squad? He said at the very end.

Because the alternate, which would be to fly one of the experts on this site down to fix this (time spent+food+lodging+beer+possible property damage) would cost you a ton more!

If your desktop completely clears, with no start button or anything, here are a couple of remedies:

1. Press ALT + TAB. If that doesn't work:

2. Press CTL/ALT/DEL and open Task Manager.
Click Applications
Click New Task
Type in "explorer" (including quotation marks)
Enter.

Now, before you need this information, write it on a sticker and put it somewhere like on the bottom of your keyboard, because if your desktop disappears, there is no way to find anything anywhere except on a piece of paper outside your computer.

Even if you believe your virus problem is solved, have your system checked out by a trained security analyst at a free tech forum, such as -
