I have ATT land phone lines but a third party DSL service. Is it possible to use a typical ATT (2wire) DSL modem router? I currently have Zoom and it's old. I have Windows7.
Aren't most DSL modems similar and usable, if you have Windows7?
It depends on how badly 2Wire customized/gimped the firmware for AT&T. Personally, I'd call your ISP and see of they have a list of approved modems that they will support. I recently tried to replace a dead Verizon modem/router with a Netgear unit (only thing Best Buy had that day) and when it didn't work Verizon tech support was useless and sent me to Netgear support who was useless. I'm pretty sure I know what the issue was, and its something Verizon should have been able to fix from their end, but Verizon was too retarded to do it.
Your operating system isn't a factor in the equation.
What's diff between the ATT/2Wire DSL modem and all the others?
Well AT&T is a crap company and so is 2Wire. There's no telling what kind of proprietary stuff they've done to the modem to make it work with AT&T. You can always try it if you want, just don't be too surprised if it doesn't work.
bestbuy.com doesn't seem to have that ATT/2wire modem any more.
What happened? It used to be so common.
Yeah they used to carry AT&T branded modems and Verizon branded modems, the same ones you get if you called the telco and had them ship you one. Last week, they had exactly one modem, the Netgear, with a sticker that said "Compatible with AT&T, Verizon, etc." I think the modem itself actually was compatible, but Verizon needed to do something on their end but wouldn't. They really didn't want to address the issue since I wasn't using a Verizon branded modem.
