Unfortunately I bought a laptop with the Windows 8 OS and I despise it, it is a made for touch-screen interface. It is impractical for work related purposes.

It should have an option for "classic view" with a fully operational start menu, and to disable the tile-based start menu which is useless on a laptop keyboard. Until they develop a better OS they should use Windows 7 for PC's and 8 for smartphones/tablets.

Disagree.
It's an annoying experience. Yes, with modern touchpad software it's much nicer having zones all over the touchpad. But I am constantly touching the wrong part and flipping to different apps. The stupid Charms bar always pops out at me because I touch the right edge. Scrolling isn't quite smooth enough.

I do agree with you that the Start Menu should get a big redesign if it comes back. It's far to convoluted.

Best advise I've gotten from IT professionals (including employees of Microsoft) over the years is NEVER count on a '.0' version being right. Wait for a service pack to be issued or a '.1' version before doing any serious work.

That goes for any software, not just the stuff out of Redmond.

Windows 8 is a '.2' version. It's improved from '.1' and '.0', that's for certain.

Good point. The same goes for cars and other toys, as well as computer hardware/software.

I recently purchased a Windows 8.1 laptop, and was pretty surprised to find no start menu.

I've been using XP until now, so I was not familiar with the issues people have been experiencing with newer releases of Windows.

So I searched Google, and found out there are 3rd party apps that you can install in Window 8 that will give you start menu functionality.

I looked at several, and ultimately decided to install this one:

Classic Shell - Start menu and other Windows enhancements

So far, I really like it.

The website mentions that it has been in development for 4 years, and 10 million people have downloaded it, so I knew it was not some relatively new untested app that would cause me problems.

It has a lot of different options, and after playing with them, I ended up with a start menu that looks and works pretty similar to Windows XP.

Best of all, it was a free app!

I can easily switch between the Classic Start Menu, and the new Windows 8 Menu system, depending on which I want to use.

Start8 Start menu for Windows 8. Bring the Windows 8 Start menu back.

Start8 is the other well known one. It's not free but in every review I've read, people seem to say it's easier for the novice to configure.
At $5.00 it's a bargain.
