Being that the average consumer is more likely to buy the low to mid range printer lines, and the ink prices almost always make it cheaper to just throw out the old printer and buy a new one instead of buying the ink, and I know many people who do this, how is there not some agency up the butts of the companies for encouraging excess e-waste? I mean heck California just passed a set of cow fart regulations (yes, it's real Cow Fart Regulations Approved By California’s Legislature « CBS San Francisco ), yet these printers are allowed to continue to have ink that is so expensive that the printers are tossed out on a regular basis.
Not talking about then. Talking about the new release. Still underhanded. The original wasn't underhanded - I consider it illegal. I'm sure it's not, but it should be.

Like most companies they're just testing the waters to see what they can get away with. Look at Keurig, they did the same thing with their V2 coffee machines, only "licensed" k-cups would function in the machine.
They aren't sorry they implemented it, just sorry enough people complained that they had to reverse it and lose money.
I always wonder how many printer sales they lose because of the crap they pull. It must not hurt enough to change their screw the customer policies.
Lose? I have a stack of BNIB miscellaneous HP printers that I purchased on clearance that when I run out of ink/toner, I remove a printer and replace it with another. It makes no sense to purchase ink/toner for any of them. OTOH, my Brother units get toners as it is economical to replace the toners rather than the printers.
My latest acquisition was the HP X476DW for $50 at Staples (132849)
A bit underhanded, but at least anyone who pays attention can remove it.
That will work for me. By the way, I would never buy any of the cheaper, including do all, Epson inkjet printers. If you don't use them all the time the heads clog and take lots of ink to get them to work again. I have two of these that are going in the trash in about a week.
I have had a Canon photo Pro printer for several years now, and never had a problem with clogged heads, regardless if I use it often or not. Then I have a B&W HP 1102 laser printer that has worked like a champ for three years using the cheap toner sold at Amazon. Not a single problem. So, I have decided to buy a HP color do all (fax, scan, print) laser printer to replace the Epson printers, but will only do so if I can use the software talked above so I can use non-HP toner that's cheaper.
