They'll be doing so until 2020.

NH Dave,
I began following the instructions in bold in the link above. I didn't get very far!
I did turn off windows updates.
when I got in the command line, I tried the first step after stopping Services, Win Updates.
I got the following on the command line:
invalid command.
I don' t know why it says system/32, that is what came up when I typed "net stop wuauserv" My system type is 64bit, I did check system info.

Here are some screen shots. Any idea why I can't get this first step accepted?

Thanks - my phone died last week and it's been just about 100% time going through Verizon's "step therapy" to justify a new phone. And the new one had a software failure!!! That's why it took so long for me to go through these steps.

Pruzhany got an update 12/15.... I still didn't have any.

The first entry didn't work because of a misspelling. I would suggest copying and pasting the commands, copy from the website, and you can paste by right clicking in the command window.

Not sure why it's opening in system32 but I don't think it should affect the process.

It may be easier to do this...

Click start and in the search type in services.msc and press enter. Locate Windows Update in the list, right click and select properties and from there you can stop, start, restart and modify any other settings. To disable completely, select 'disabled' under startup type. That's it.

Hi NHDave,
The process worked, thank you very much!!!
Are you installing KB3172605 a few days after the 2nd Tues of each month, as the website advised? So I assume that MS changes this update accordingly and that we always download and install KB3ks172605 ?
Thanks. I feel like I am doing wheat is possible for my system. I know MS doesn't want to put money into win 7 and Samsung doesn't want to put money into the Galaxy 5, but this is getting difficult, unless you purchase new electronics yearly.
