Hi, everyone. I just checked the Windows Update History on my Windows 8.1 and see that Windows has tried, unsuccessfully, to install KB3121255 numerous times over the past few months. I tried top install it manually and that also failed.

Apparently this update was originally "optional " but has now been changed to "recommended".

I'm very computer illiterate but I googled this failure and am wondering if it applies primarily to older computers and/or to mainly Windows 7 (although it references Windows 8.1)

I found the following but It's all Greek to me. Do I really need this update?
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3121255

Thanks so much for any advice!

Found a download for Windows 8.1 KB3121255 update on the Microsoft web site. link

From what I can read from your original link, this should have been installed via a normal windows update.

I'm a big fan of the notion that if it's not broken, it doesn't need fixing. You didn't mention if you were experiencing the system crash described in the original link that you provided.

If you want to try to get this patch, run Windows Update and see if it applies it. If it fails to apply the patch, you could then try downloading and installing the patch yourself, using the link in this post.

Thanks so much, djmilf. I did try to download from the link you priovided but got a message that it doesnt apply to my computer. I dont understand why, as I followed the instructions for Win8.1, which is what I have.

You're right in that I havent been experiencing the problem that this update is supposed to fix -- so I probably dont need it. It's just surprising, and a little irritating, to see that Microsoft keeps trying to apply the update, even after failing at least 20-25 times over the past few months.
