I moved to Epic Privacy Browser, and it has made a big difference, as it keeps the people from putting trackers on your computer. Example I used to get a lot of Ransom Ware at least weekly on our 4 computers (mine, my wife's, my Laptop, and one we have dedicated to a very large screen T.V. where we watch movies, etc, with direct screaming. Since going to Epic we have not had it since.
It also stops people from knowing your location. When they search it will send them to other parts of the nation, and even foreign countries if you prefer. That is the privacy part.
And those targeted ads based on our searches are a thing of the past.
Microsoft has taken action. Global controls for preventing video from auto-playing within Microsoft Edge are being rolled out, scheduled for the fall of 2018.
This topic isn't about security. It's about getting rid of an annoying advertisement.
I can't open Page 1 of this post (says URL is blocked by content editor, or something to that effect), but is it safe to assume that you've tried an app such as AdBlock?
I am still using Waterfox and Vivaldi almost exclusively unless I have to open an internal server or management console at work then I stick with IE/Edge.
There are just two add-ons/extensions I use on both browsers: Lastpass & Adblock Plus
You have to experiment for yourself but if the sites you visit are secure, then some sort of adblocking is more than enough. The more secure the browser becomes, the less functional it will likely to become.
Also, more add-ons, slower the browsing will be so pick your extensions very carefully.
PS. There is a thin line between annoying pop-ups and browser security.

It's ironic that I visited the site and the video auto-played, and suddenly my CPU fan accelerated to maximum and hot air started coming out. I had to leave the site, fearing it could blow my CPU.
I'm serious. I think if I let my laptop set on that site it would probably burn out my laptop.
I presume all browsers will be prodded to follow suit.
@RocketDog, I'm not the OP. IDK. My 'hosts' file works fine in killing adverts I know about. What I learned from the above is to not visit PC World's site. That's just damned annoying!
^^^ sorry, I am posting from my phone and this site works just fine. No autoplayed video.
BTW: you can setup your browser to NOT to autoplay videos.
Ha-hah! When did you get so Hi-Tech nina?
