Considering putting Windows 7 on an old machine that I have not used much.

Trying to determine if it will run:

Windows 7 hardware minimums:
Here's what you need to have:
  • Internet access (to download Windows 7 RC and get updates)
  • A PC with these system requirements:
    • 1 GHz or faster 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor
    • 1 GB RAM (32-bit) / 2 GB RAM (64-bit)
    • 16 GB available disk space (32-bit) / 20 GB (64-bit)
    • DirectX 9 graphics processor with WDDM 1.0 or higher driver
Figuring on 32-bit, I have:
A P4 2.6 HT processer
1GB DDR, with another open slot
Getting a new hard drive for this. 750GB or 1TB. Plenty of HD.

DirectX 9 graphics Processor in my PNY GeForce 5600Ultra card, with 9 installed...
And my question is how to know I have the right driver?
I emailed PNY and no response yet.
I have a graphics driver: "...wddi..." as the closest thing, alphabet soup-wise to "wddm"

Thoughts?

well to be honest heres what will happen if it isnt direct x 9 it you will know it wont have aero enabled or the option...
second if its anything like ati 9200se it was a software update in xp which made it direct x 9 capable... in vista and 7 there is no software update making it a standard vga graphics card i think that was confusing to alot seeing as older cards in XP were updated via software and arent in vista/7

I know I have Direct X 9 installed, and that the card is capable, capable of the "new DirectX 9."
2003-2004?

But, as I think of the reading and updates I did last night, yes, I suppose the card is updated via software.
Well, if that is the weak link, I can upgrade the video card fairly cheaply.

Can't even begin to guess, but it was running on my laptop for a month on 1GB using a Core 2 Duo 1.83Ghz. I just recently upgraded to 4GB and really didn't notice much of a performance increase, although my laptop has a pretty mellow life.

Windows 7 RC is freaking awesome! I've got it on just about every computer around me in some form from dual/tri/quad booting, to single install of it. It's flawless so far. Once I made the move to x64, all my computers run on it no matter if it's got 1gb of RAM or 8gb of RAM.

ASUS P5Q SE PLUS Motherboard
Intel C2D E8400 @3.0ghz stock Overclocked @ 4.16ghz
G.Skill DDR2 800 4x2gb RAM
nVidia GeForce GTX260 Core 216 Graphics Card
Seagate Barracuda 750gb HDD x1 (Backups Only)
OCZ Vertex 60gb SSD x1 (OS ONLY, no programs, etc)
Western Digital Black Caviar 640gb x4 in RAID 0

It plays all my games beautifully. Crysis on max settings is awesome, Call of Duty 4 and 5 are awesome. Can't wait til I get Sims 3 and test it on Win7. So far everything is freaking awesome. The XP Mode feature, which allows you to use your old XP programs seemlessly is very well as well.

Microsoft did something right for once, even though I do use Vista Ultimate x64 right now as a boot option on my main rig. Overall, they've got my money for Windows 7 Ultimate or whatever the highest edition is. And it'll be cheaper to as I always ONLY buy OEM versions of OSes.

Gotta love that Wolfdale CPU for it's OCing abilities. I have the same one but have yet found the need to OC. Your system is pretty similare to my gaming box, same graphics (I have a 260 OC), CPU, 8GB RAM, a RAID 0 array, except I'm running a P5E board and Server 08 x64. Not switching to 7 on this until it's gold, and it'll come from my action pack, no extra cash to shell out for it

I have mentioned that I couldn't print from W7 64 bit because Dell didn't support my 5100cn with Vista 64 bit drivers.
Enter "Compatibility Mode."

I finally tracked this down tonight on MS TechNet Forums, and it looks like I will be running the printer until it croaks.

HOW TO: Install a Hardware Device Driver using Compatibility Mode
