I got Dell Inspiron 14 laptop with 4 gigs and supposedly doesn't need more memory. Thing is as slow as can be. My 2gig Compaq/HP that's 2 years old is better than this.

Was trying to keep the cost down, buy a little better and don't need a memory upgrade. Apparently that's not the case. Do I have to add memory anyway?

Naturally there is a 15% restocking fee if returned. Please give me some useful advice before I throw this piece of crap out the window and throw 100% of the cost away.

What does task manager show running? If it is a new Dell, or any other brand, it is probably bogged down with crapware that these vendors pre-install.

Or I'll give you $100 for it

The old saying ...."one can never have to much memory" applies here if that is the only thing amiss with this computer.

Well, tightwad, this tightwad would rather have paid less for an "economy" level of laptop that needed say $150 upgrade worth of memory than get a better grade computer that STILL needs the extra $150 memory upgrade. Get my point?

I just removed CA Antivirus Suite from a slow computer, and it came back to life. Make sure you run MalwareBytes to ensure that you do not have spyware or malware. You might want to run an online virus scan, like housecall from housecall.trendmicro.com. If you have Norton/Symantec preinstalled, that can kill your performance, as well. I don't own a computer with 4GB of memory, and ALL of mine are very fast.

I'll take that on, but this is just out of the box. The older laptop has malware bytes already. What sped it up was adding memory from 1 gig to 2 gig. This one comes with 4 gig and online it its slow. No excuse.

Turn off all programs and services not needed. Bloat kills laptops that are slower by design than standard computers. They have to conserve energy and that means slower rpm hard drives. Several bottle necks. Look in the systems tray for apps you are not using that are running. Exit those programs each time you boot up.
