Parts of SoNo may be sketchy but there is plenty more of Norwalk to live in....Norwalk would be great for someone your age! There are plenty of apartments and condos for rent in nice sections.

If your main concerns are Metro-North and being in an area with lots of single people, I'd stick to Stamford or White Plains in Westchester. They are both mini versions of NY -- lots of bars & restaurants, nice apartment buildings and condos and frequent trains (both locals & express) to NYC. Norwalk & Bridgeport/Fairfield are longer commutes and they're smaller (ie less to do).
