You are correct about the crime rates, but there are certain sections of New Haven that have very little crime (mentioned above). Most parts of Bridgeport are rather rundown and even in the nicer areas of Bridgeport, crime is all around you. Sure in the seedy areas of New Haven the crime is horrendous, but Bridgeport lacks much of what New Haven has.

South Norwalk is very nice but once you go a few blocks from the main drag, you have some of the city's worst areas. Just keep in mind that if it's cheap, there's a reason it's cheap.

Don't judge Bridgeport by what you see from I-95. You obviously have not been to the North End, Beardsley Park or Black Rock. Beautiful neighborhoods with a lot of great things to do. Great parks (it isn't called the Park City for nothing), restaurants and shops. Also, the city has made great strides in improvement downtown with literally hundreds of apartments been built in beautiful old buildings. And there is a lot of new construction going on across the city with developers realizing what an affordable alternative it is to the rest of Fairfield County. It was recently named one of the best places in the country to invest in real estate.

As for New Haven, without Yale there is not a lot there. The neighborhoods there are just as run down as Bridgeports and the crime is worse. How many nights go by without another shooting there??? Come on, both are gritty cities with issues. JMHO Jay

Both are not gritty cities. Both are cities with gritty parts. I have grown up in the Bridgeport area and have been there many times. I'm familiar with the North End, Black Rock and Beardsley. They are OK areas, but still have their issues. Bridgeport doesn't have the 'professional' population that New Haven has. Bridgeport also lacks the plentiful public transportation that New Haven has. Check out the bus schedules, and the cab availability in the cities. You'll find that New Haven's is much better.

You don't think there are shootings in Bridgeport too? There are, and very often.

Sure without Yale, NH wouldn't be much. But Yale is there, and around the campus is beautiful and desirable, IMO. Then there's East Rock and Westville, both of which are great and safe areas of NH to live and raise a family.

New Haven vs Bridgeport? I'd pick New Haven any day.
