Trying to decide between relocating to Ridgefield or Fairfield. We have one four year old son and looking for community with good schools. My husband commutes to NYC, but the closer communities are out of our price range. I was wondering if any one has advice on areas and various neighborhoods. Thanks in advance.
Fairfield has the advantage of 3 train stations on the main New Haven line within its borders. Whereas Ridgefield is situated on the much slower, less frequent Danbury line with older trains.
In Ridgefield, you’ll want to drive to a station like Katonah which adds some driving time.
So, I think Fairfield gets the edge on an NYC commute.
Other than that, they are different towns. Ridgefield has more of a charming New England-style downtown whereas Fairfield has more dining and shopping overall, along with the beach. Ridgefield is primarily wooded and quiet, but Fairfield has many distinct areas including the shoreline. Fairfield also has more socioeconomic diversity, from super wealthy in Southport Harbor and Greenfield Hill, to solid middle class in places like Tunxis Hill. Ridgefield is more uniformly upper middle class.
Fairfield is a better commute. Otherwise both towns are great towns but with different character. Fairfield is busier and more populated, while Ridgefield is quieter and more rural.
As others have said both are great towns to consider. The schools are very good. Fairfield is a bigger town which means it is busier and has more shopping and entertainment options in town. Still Ridgefield has just about everything you need in town or nearby. It really is personal preference which suits you best. I suggest you visit both and see which you like better. Jay
There is an awful lot going on between Fairfield and Westport: much critical mass in terms of amenities all within short drive. So I suspect convenience factor is higher with Fairfield area over Ridgefield. And, then, as others have said, there is the LI Sound at your doorstep.
That said, it is really a question of different strokes as either will not disappoint...
Ridgefield is more charming overall, but Fairfield is on the coast.
Southport and Greenfield Hill are pretty charming, though.
