You're right that many parts of the South are better integrated than anything we ever see in CT. On the other hand, there are parts of the South that are still "sundown towns" where black folks know it's unsafe to be after dark. And everything in between.

It's a complicated dynamic, and it's just as foolish to paint the South as a haven of tolerance as it is to claim it's still like it was before 1955. Some places are, though, and history doesn't vanish as quickly as some people might like.

Where is there a close to equal ratio of blacks and whites? If you could tell me 2 or 3 places in the South, I would appreciate it...being fact and all......

Having just spent Sept to leaving Ct on 12/25,I would say you are in for a rude awakening weather wise, cold, expensive and very little sun, mostly cloudy from Nov thru April.
Need a very good income to survive in Ct.

Charlotte, NC

Atlanta, Ga

Memphis, TN

I know their suburbs are way more diverse then up north. Look up any town within 20 miles of those 3 cities on city data and find out for your self. Of course not every town in the metro area is 50% or more black, but it's more then any city's in the northeast.

Nope, I couldn't find a middle to upper class town/suburb that has close to equal ratios of black and white. Could you DM a suburb of each that meets that criteria? I would love to know about such a community! TIA!

I can tell you one here in Connecticut: Bloomfield. The town is about 45% black, 45% white and 10% others. Connecticut's divsion is not necessarily race related, it is more economic related. Jay

True, but Connecticut's economic classes are not diverse.

Must not have looked very hard. Not all are 50 percent black, but many more suburbs are more diverse.

For Charlotte, look up Rock Hill, SC, or look up Mecklenburg County, NC. It isn't 50% black, but it's way more diverse then any county in Connecticut.

For Atlanta, look up Dekalb County, it's over 50% black.

Memphis, TN is located in Shelby County which is 50% black.

While our cities contain a diverse population, our counties as a whole are not diverse. The black population is much more consistent whether you are in the city or in a suburb down south. Of course not every area is 50% black, and some areas aren't 50% white, but it sure as heck is more diverse then here. This really doesn't mean anything to the OP because she won't encounter racism here, all I am saying is it's not as diverse and the races up here don't "mingle" as often, which is mostly due to the lack of diversity in economic classes in Connecticut. This might not mean much to us, but to her it might mean a lot.
