Thanks to everyone for their input here, I know I'm not buying in the area but I'm just interested in housing costs in different parts of the country and was caught by surprise by this thread.

That's the thing, 500k-600k is a weird price range in Fairfield for a decent sized place. There's usually a catch.

If the job is in Fairfield, honestly I would not recommend a house in Fairfield itself for that price range. Personally, I'd be looking in:

Trumbull
Monroe
Shelton
Milford
Stratford (Northern and Eastern)
Orange

All super easy commutes to Fairfield and a lot cheaper.
