Reasonable??? There is a $250 nonrefundable application fee. Then there is a $5,000 initiation fee, a $3,000 bond, a monthly fee of $205, a quarterly fee of $75 for the "sinking fund" and a $50 annual corkage fee. That works out to $10,810 the first year and $2,810 a year after that. I have never joined a club but wow, for that kind of money you could just put in your own pool and tennis court and have it paid off in 10 years or so. Jay
Well it's comparatively reasonable if you look at other clubs within Fairfield such as Patterson Club, Hunt Club, Brooklawn, and The Beach Club. Patterson Club no longer offers a social membership so it's $85,000 initiation fee, which doesn't include the monthly food minimum, maintenance fees and yearly dues. A gunite pool is not cheap from my quotes $50k plus and over with landscaping and the quote I got for a tennis quote was $40k. The $3,000 bond you receive back when you resign.
@ JayCT - No, it does not seem reasonable right up front, but yearly after that it works out relatively well - under the assumption that the yearly dues don't increase dramatically, and you have over 10K to put up the first year - plus the 3k back at resignation. J&A is correct about the other clubs - Brooklawn is $65,000 to join. My husband has a friend who was grandfathered in there - he pays only seven-hundred-something a year.
I wasn't even remotely impressed driving by the Beach Club, either... it looks to need a good power washing and a fresh coat of paint, at least. Great River in Milford looks beautiful, my husband wanted to join so he can golf, but it's a golf only club, and he won't join if we can swim/dine together, etc. Nothing else is near reasonable and we have too much to do to our almost 100 year old home.
Phooey, I say. I still wonder what the reason was behind the community pool being shot down some years ago. Town residents put up over $100,000 of their own money and the whole thing was nixed.
I think that the old timers (which includes members of my family) never thought there was a need for a pool in town. They feel that if you want to swim there are beaches to do that but not everyone likes to sit on the sand or swim in salt water or stale lake water. I think the other problem faced would be where to put a pool. There are not a lot of good locations since most people do not want it anywhere near their home. Jay
"Not in my backyard" type of thing. I very clearly can see that happening around here. It's not happening in my actual backyard, either.
