I am not sure how far you are from Grand Central Terminal but assuming it is not far the 5:56 AM train from New Haven gets you to Grand Central at 7:39 AM. That will give you 20 minutes to get to your job.
Unfortunately it does not appear that any Shoreline East trains will get you into New Haven in time for the 5:56 AM train. The first Shoreline East train that connects you to Metro North get you to Grand Central at 7:51 AM. Not sure if that works but either way, it is along trip. Not one I would want to do. Jay
Ha, "costs are not an factor". OK, then drive to Bridgeport and take the commuter helicopter that leaves everyday around 6:45. You'll be on Wall St. by 7. $195 each way.
Whoops, never mind. It seems they went out of business. Didn't see THAT coming...

I think that was very constructive, until I found out that the service is suspended. He is in an impossible scenario, and "cost is not a factor". I provided an optimal solution given those parameters. They anticipate service being restored by early 2012.
Train. This is not an "impossible scenario" as long as your workplace is near Grand Central (as Jay said) or if you are able to arrive a little later than the typical worker. When I was considering buying a home in CT, I wanted to live in the River Valley (near Madison) and continue commuting to Stamford. My plan was to take a quick nap down to New Haven before the transfer or to nap between New Haven and Fairfield. If you head to bed early, you can use the time on the train to read the newspaper or catch up on work remotely. You won't see family and friends much during the week (this scenario may be awful if you have kids) but that's the price to pay to live in (imho) the most charming area of CT and to work in a major city. You shouldn't consider this commute by car, however, because there is stop-and-go traffic, if not completely stopped traffic, everyday near the George Washington Bridge at all daylight hours of the day.

My bad. Didn't see your 'edit' - thought you typed it all in one post to be snarky.
