My in-laws live in Simsbury adjacent to Stratton Brook State Forest and they see bears all the time. The only time they are more careful is when it’s a mama bear with her cubs. Otherwise they just shoo them away. Jay

Were you making noise before you saw it? The key thing is never to surprise a Bear in their habitat. When I hiked in the middle of the night in the Adirondacks I made sure I was whistling or making some noise with the trekking pole.
