Just bought a digital police scanner and have taken the hobby back up after getting out of it for many years. There is some very interesting stuff to listen to out there especially New Haven PD.

After spending some time listening to the New Haven PD all I can say is WOW. The amount of crime going on there is nuts. The amount of gunshots picked up on the spotshotter (gunshot locator technology) is crazy, especially in Newhalville. You only hear about the shootings on the news if someone is killed but the amount of gunfire that doesnt make the news is nuts. The majority of the stuff I hear seems to be very young kids, usually on bikes and many carrying handguns commuting most of the crime. Just look at 2 murders this week both victims were in their teens.

Listen on a weekend night and the channel is so busy they have to use a radio code to silence the radio traffic for only urgent stuff.

I think I've said this before. New Haven is like two cities. There is the safe, walkable downtown with shopping, restaurants and lots to do and then there is the crime ridden, poverty stricken areas that I completely avoid. Something needs to be done about the crime there.

The problem is the rare occasion when it spills over to downtown. Then you have freaked out suburbanites that avoid the city. And that does a lot of harm.

Listen to a scanner of any major city and you will hear the same thing. One neighborhood that gets more action then the others. It is too bad though that New Haven can't clean this mess up. Jay

I'm sure South Norwalk sounds almost as bad, they just haven't digitized their system yet so there is no feed.

Completely legal to listen in but many have gone over to digital encryption which is close to impossible to crack. Bridgeport just converted to digital encryption and they were one of the best frequencies to listen to. Many people say with todays financial problems most PD's just dont have the money for radio upgrades so regular analog is going to be around for awhile.

CT State Police is also very interesting to listen to. They are on a digital system but only a few channels are encrypted. Listening in to them will give you much more respect for what they deal with. The highways are absolute chaos out there in CT and these troopers are the first responders to all the horrific accidents out there. It is sometimes hard to listen in when they roll up to a bad accident especially if there are fatalities invloved.
