We used to live in Shelton. The schools are good, but test scores won't be great because it is very economically diverse. White Hills and Huntington are desirable areas, while Howe Ave. is very transient with plenty of low income housing. There's a wide range of in between also. But the high school has a wide range of extracurriculars and advanced classes.

I live in Trumbull but there's nothing to do here unless your in high school and like to hang out at the mall or movie's. Not even many good restaurants: O Bar in Trumbull Center the best, Old Towne in town hall more family oriented, and Marisa's on Main street is overrated, imo.

I am kind of curious as to what you chose, if anything yet. I moved to Shelton a few years ago and it's the best decision I've made. Moving to Trumbull was a huge priority for myself but couldnt find anything I liked in the price range and the taxes were a killer. A house right over the Trumbull line went on the market and I scooped it up. I can throw a rock into Trumbull with Shelton taxes. Now, granted, I do NOT have kids but the Huntington area is amazing and I never regretted the decision I have made. So I would love to see which route you've taken. Good luck with everything--house hunting can be tough sometimes!

My caveat is that I am the author of this thread: //www.city-data.com/forum/conne...g-picture.html

Bingo. I think we've agreed on this in other threads. I graduated from a very affluent lower FFC town and there, CAPT was by and large a joke. To rank schools based on CAPT is, IMO, inaccurate.

I agree that it is not a good idea to rank towns by CAPT scores, I do think they serve a purpose and can give someone an idea of how well a school system is performing in relation to others. Shelton High School scores under the state average in 3 of the 4 sections of the test which to me says it is under the state average. While that does not mean it is a bad school, anyone looking to move to a town with good schools should investigate the schools further. Jay

Yep. I also came from a top HS myself that drilled everyone on how to score well on CAPT's. Never really learned anything from it other than how to take the test.

I graduated for a very mediocre HS in lower FFLD County too and I've done very well for myself. Sometimes these scores are overrated.

Jay--I have never seen you speak well about the town of Shelton--is there a main reason why you are not of fan?

I don't want to speak for Jay, but everything he has said about Shelton is spot on. I do disagree with him that the schools are subpar due to test scores though.

Jay said the town used to have a depressed feel, but when Route 8 was completed it shot up in popularity with businesses and residences alike. That's 100% true.

I lived in Shelton for some time and it was a great place to live. We didn't buy in the best area, so couldn't wait to get out, but there are some fantastic neighborhoods in town.

It is not that I do not like Shelton. It is a nice town. The Huntington and White Hills sections are beautiful and I know the taxes there are low. What has always bugged me about Shelton is that for a long time there was a poor man's attitude in town that still shows. They never spent money on improving things so you had old schools, public buildings (did they ever remodel City Hall? It was a real dump last time I was there) and parks. That has changed somewhat but there are still remnants of this here and there. I have not heard good things about Shelton's Mayor who has some pretty shady connections.

As for the schools I was surprised to see that Shelton High did not exceed the state averages on the Connecticut Academic Performance Test. Despite Kidyankee's contention that this doe snot matter, it does say something about the school to an outsider looking for a town with good schools. While I woulod not rule out living in Shelton, it would not be my first choice of a town either. Jay
