Drove by it tonight, never noticed it before. Then again, I don't drive in the 'hood too often.

Anyone know what it is, its history? It didn't look operational. Very ominous at night.

Wow, 1.5 million square feet. Must be one of the larger structures in CT.

That is the old GE factory. When it was built it was the largest building in the country. While it is so obsolete and in bad shape, it is kind of sad that they are tearing it down. Jay

Forgot to add that GE made a lot of things there. Small appliances like irons and toasters plus I think things like light switches. In its day, Bridgeport was a massive manufacturing center making everything from corsets to sewing machines. Jay

I took a little abandoned Bridgeport tour last night. With all the talk of a downtown resurgence, there are literally blocks of completely shuttered city buildings just a stone's throw away. I saw a sign on the Majestic it's being restored, but that's going to take A LOT of effort in the condition it's in.

I think there was talk about that, but it died quickly for a lot of reasons.

The property has been around since the early 20th Century. Mercury is a concern as is asbestos. Also, the electrical system was so out of date it would've been nearly impossible to upgrade. I agree it would've been great if they could save the structure but the cost was prohibitive.

Man, if they rebuilt the Majestic like the did the Palace, it'd be a treasure to the city.

But you're right there are a few blocks of blights, particularly the stretch of Main north of Golden Hill. Great buildings that were allowed to go to hell.

The whole area around the Majestic is abandoned. I don't think suburbanites would go to the Majestic in that neighborhood. It's a shame.

IMO there are only a couple of really nice blocks in downtown, not enough to make it an attraction to the masses.
