I generally prefer the NW, but so do others - as it's a bit more desirable and therefore a bit more expensive than the "quiet corner". They're both pretty quiet to me though, and I've never seen any evidence of traffic.

NW has a nice mix of sophistication and rural. There's farms and really rural bits, but some great restaurants and shops too. It's also closer to civilization, unless you really like Boston. And although there are some real nice towns in the NE too, I just find the NW to be better tended - there's a bit more pride taken in the landscaping, for instance.

Let's put things in perspective too: both areas are MUCH cheaper than southwest CT. You can get a great house with a huge lot for under $400k, which can't be said for other parts of the state.

I myself think it's great in NE, or eastern CT. First off, you're right near the shore.. even if you are just east of CT river, you only got an hour's drive at most to get to some great beaches.. I don't know about NW CT, but I'd rather go to Misquamikit (sp?) than go to a Long Island Sound beach.
Plus too, so many people are into their "lawns" they allow all these toxic pesticides on it, which are flowing into the sewer which go into Long Island sound. Just a health warning, now... god forbid I speak the truth here..
Are far as affordable and pleasant and less crime, YES, definitely true for towns like Colchester, Marlborough, Salem, etc.. Andover is pretty too. So is Bolton, with three man made lakes.
I think if you're an outdoor person, such as we are, you'd definitely like the Eastern CT region more. If you are into hunting, fishing, swimming, hiking, you'd be in hog heaven in some of these areas.
People are more laid back, especially in the country towns, in eastern CT, and less "snobby" or prone to be judging you if you are not dressed to the nines or don't have the latest car or shoes, or hairdo, etc.
They ARE down to earth in eastern CT and that's what it so great! It's more like New England USED to be all over, than what it is today.
however, make sure you got a generator and plenty of gas, as the electric co pretty much left them in the dark for over a week and concentrated on getting the towns WEST of CT river's power line hooked up first!

I've noticed you have a reading comprehension issue, and like to twist words.

That was my post you are referring to where I had responded to the post below:

I'm also getting tired of a select few people on this board who can't seem to comprehend anything. Very frustrating.

If it's any consideration, we live PT in NW Ct not too far from the covered bridge near Sharon and Cornwall. Do our share of traveling around the NE and am partial to the Litchfield Hills. BTW, just recieved my copy of the "2012 Scenic Connecticut-Litchfield Hills calendar" and from this I don't see how the NE corner of CT holds a candle to the Litchfield Hills

Starting to get back into looking at properties... New Milford has been on my mind. Found some nice land to build on for less than $300k. Doesnt say the size of the lot though.

Upland Rd., New Milford CT 06776 | Homes.com

342 North Candlewood Lake Rd, New Milford CT 06776 | Homes.com

Edit.... And this one for $13,000. lol. Half Acre. http://www.homes.com/listing/1447810...LFORD_CT_06776

Well just wait till you see our "2012 Scenic Quiet Corner Calendar". You'll be hating then, trust me!

Here is a sneak peak:

LOL Seriously though, you pretty much embody the part time resident of NW CT. I'm not sure if that's a compliment.

Quick: NW or NE CT?

If you honestly can't answer, you proved my point.

P.S. The bridge is in West Cornwall.

NE CT certainly has its scenic towns, but I agree with the previous poster that NE CT can't hold a candle to the beauty of NW CT.

I think most folks have been spot on in is thread though I am pretty ignorant to both regions unfortunately. Ive been both a fair amount of times, western for day trips and eastern cause I was "active"with a gal from ECSU. I agree that NE is more new englandy which regrettably I used to think of as "white trashy" for some idiotic reason, I suppose it was because the first place I went to there was willimantic.

Agreed, NE CT has some very scenic spots, as JViello has shown.

However, I especially agree with the comment made about how the NW seems more kept up as far as landscaping, house maintenance, etc.. I'm sure it's partly due to and having the money to have everything professionally landscaped and tended to constantly, even when the home isn't being lived in, but it does lend a different 'air' to the region. That may not matter to everyone, but I think it contributes to the greater desirability.

At the same time, I would never dismiss the 'weekend retreat distance' (aka distance from NYC) as a major contributor to the relative real estate cost gap between the two, but I think there is more to it than that.

That said, people can drive around the areas and make up their own mind. One thing I find in the NW is that you get the feeling that the wealth is established. Towns like Washington have been wealthy since the revolutionary period. That's not to say it hasn't been 'discovered' by New Yorkers, but wealth there is nothing new. That aspect has a definite effect on the atmosphere of the region.

If you really want a truly throwback rural new england lifestyle without the creeping sophistication of the NW, the NE is definitely your place. Makes you wonder how long that will last though
