I wonder if they can do something like this... a tunnel or maybe a brigde connecting Long Island to Connecticut?

Over the last 100 years or so there have been a couple of studies to connect Connecticut with Long Island. The last one I remember was about 20 years ago. It would be very expensive and do a lot of environmental damage to Long Island Sound. There was some opposition to it and little support particularly in Connecticut which was concerned that Long Island traffic woes would spread here. With the economy in the dumps and taxes going through the roof it is not likely this would go anywhere. JMHO, Jay

That's already happened without the help of Long Islanders. I-95 now rivals the LIE. Because of traffic alone, I am dead against this bridge.

I think there would be less traffic if they did built the brigde because I would assume that amount of cars would be balance being less on both inland and the tunnel. I also think that building a brigde/tunnel would be faster to get into Long Island than driving many miles around it.

There have been proposals in the past, with Rockerfeller and Moses looking at a bridge that would have connected I95 at 287 in Rye to Syossett on Long Island in the 70's. As recently as 2008 a private builder proposed a tunnel from Rye to Syosset that would repay the billions in costs by tolls. In the 60's and 70's there were separate proposals of bridges and tunnels from Norwalk, New Haven and Guilford to various points on the island. I think the Guilford connection would have been to Rivershead.

Costs and environmental concerns and Rye/Greenwich protectionism kept anything from moving forward. But it sure would have relieved the Whitestone and Throgsneck jams, exacerbated by the repair work that never ends.

Not going to happen. There's bigger fish to fry with highway infrastructure in the area.

If anything, maybe in 50 years you'll see a high speed rail connection.

I have been hearing this suggestion since I was a kid, too young even to drive. I am now retired, so doubt any of use will see it in our lifetimes. But it worked between France and England, so not impossible. DOT would spend decades studying it and decades more building it.

The last thing we need is an influx of more New Yorkers into CT.

+1

Moderator please close the thread before this topic becomes viral lolx!

I cant see how the measly benefit of "not having to detour via whitestone bridge to go to Boston" justify the cost of the bridge involved.

Something like this "might" justify the cost:
