Hi, I'm from Fairfield county, and looking to rent some where cheaper, and closer to work (I work in Milford). I found an apartment in Westville. Is that a good area?
What are some areas to avoid in New Haven?

What about West Haven? West Haven is closer to Milford, so I would prefer living there. What areas should I avoid in West Haven?

Thank you!

Westville is nice. It borders some not-so-nice areas, but is a good area.

Closer to Milford is generally better in West Haven. Near the water is nicer, and north by Orange is not bad. When you get near Route 1 and New Haven, that's when it starts to get sketchy.

Sometimes you can find deals in Milford too, which would be a better place to live. The nicer parts of West Haven might be close in price to some parts of Milford.

More specifically, the apartment I found online is at Whalley Ave and Hubringer.

Personally, I would avoid West Haven (if you are going to live in the suburbs, you might as well go with Milford, since West Haven doesn't have that much going for it in my opinion), and focus your search on New Haven.

Westville is great, but personally I would stay within the area between Yale, Route 34, Forest Road and Whalley Avenue. Hubinger is a nice street for the most part, but it isn't considered "central Westville" and borders some higher-crime areas.

The central area of New Haven is probably the best, but it can be expensive, and it will be a bit farther of a commute from Milford. Still, it's light years ahead of anywhere in West Haven in terms of attractiveness, walkability and livability. See //www.city-data.com/forum/21070690-post8.html for some specific recommendations about where you might want to look in New Haven.

If you do end up going with West Haven, you probably want to focus on the areas to the far south and west, like those near the Milford border. The rest of it honestly doesn't have that much going for it in my opinion, other than it being cheap. I'd avoid the areas along or near Route 1 and Campbell Avenue, even though some of them are near the shoreline.

As a counterpoint to the West Haven bashing, i'll say there are many, many, MANY more neighborhoods in New Haven that are dangerous in comparison to West Haven.

From a safety perspective, West Haven is irrefutably superior to New Haven.

/Fact.

That's true.

West Haven is still not a very appealing place though. New Haven has some great neighborhoods, Milford is very nice, West Haven - other than the beaches, meh. I'm not sure why the OP doesn't just move to the place they work - it'll still be cheaper than FFC.

Thank you everyone for your responses.

I'm not moving to Milford because I haven't found anything I can afford in Milford. I'm looking for something below $850, at least 1 BR, preferably 2 BR, so I probably won't find that in a great neighborhood anyways, I just don't want someplace dangerous, especially since I'm a single mom.

West Haven, Derby and Ansonia would probably be the best places for you to look.

I lived near Whalley and Hubinger (I was actually on Elm) as a single female and felt safe, of course basic city street smarts are necessary and should go without saying. The neighborhood had renters mixed with owners and old timers who have been there forever, giving the area a good feel.
