Hardly, and it is safer than major cities, but far less so than it was growing up.

How is it unsafe? I've lived here for almost 3 years and never had one moment where I questioned my safety or 2nd guessed walking around at 2AM at night alone.

Every metric of crime is well below the US average, especially violent crime. The index would be even lower if it weren't for retail thefts at the mall.

It has a lower violent crime rate than CT's safest cities - Stamford and Danbury.

Sorry, but I don't let misinformation fly in regards to my town.

Maybe that is because when you are a kid things like safety do not mean much. You usually do not think about crime especially in a suburb. I do not think Milford is any less safe than it was 20 years ago and I would not hesitate to walking around there late at night. Jay

Its relatively less safe. Decades back, growing up, the town would go several years between a single murder or armed robbery. The mall had no need for a police station.

Stamford and Danbury have a lower overall crime rate than Milford. Very surprising since both cities also have large shopping malls and a much more diverse population relative to Milford.

Decades back, CT Post Mall was SIGNIFICANTLY smaller than what it is today.

This is so true

Just ask yourself how many people have said to you they can't afford health care costs. Usually these are around $100 per month.

Well how many of those people have iphones that cost about $100 per month?

You can easily survive on 40K per year with a family of 4. Just don't expect every luxury that everyone nowadays takes for granted.

LOL Now that's funny. Health Insurance for a family of 4 for $100? lol

Listen, the math doesn't lie so I'll do it again for you.

40K per year at a 20% tax rate nets $2660 per month.

A 200K home with 10% down after PMI, property taxes and HI it about $1700 give or take 10 bucks.

So that leave our family of 4 living in a 200K home a whopping $960 per month left over.

Health insurance for a family of 4 is EASILY $500 per month...and that doesn't include co-pays.

So our family of four, just paying for their mortgage and health insurance have a stunning $460 left for the month.

Groceries: Easily $400 per month.
Fuel for one car (We'll assume it's paid for.) $160-200 per month.
Electricity $125 per month being frugal.

Right there we are already $285.00 over budget.

What about a phone, television, internet?

Life insurance?

Vehicle maintenance?

Vehicle property taxes?

Clothing and shoes?

Any form of entertainment outside of a checkers board? (Even the state parks are 13 bucks to get in.)

Savings?

That's assuming a family having one car that's paid for, doesn't go out at all, lives in a 200K house which we all know doesn't get you much in CT.

Yea, a family of 4 can easily live on $40K per year here.

In thinking about this further, I now think that Milford is safer now than it was 30 years ago. I have a friend who was a cop in town and he reminded me that several of Milford's beach areas have been gentrified over the years. Several areas use to have a lot of low income renters who caused a lot of problems including drugs and domestic violence. Those people were weeded out as the areas improved and living near the water became more and more desirable. He use to say that you should not walk around these areas at night. Now they are safer. Jay
