Hello All,

I am writing to ask about towns that are nearby West Hartford. I am trying to look at renting in the area, I've been on craigslist, rent.com, apartments.com, etc., I am concerned about craigslist as some of them seem like they are just plain scams, I'll see a rental for $800 then another for $1300 in the same area.

I am going to be coming up at the beginning of July to stay in a hotel somewhere in West Hartford and to get an idea of the area, then I will figure out where I'd like to live and where I'd like to work at, etc.,

I wanted to know thoughts you have in particular for rentals-my budget is between 1-2K/month, and I'd like to have something with a lot of amenities, accepts cats, has laundry in unit, parking etc.

Any thoughts on where I should stay hotel wise in West Hartford? How long is the commute with and without traffic into Hartford?

Thanks!

I stayed at the West Hartford Inn when I was apartment shopping in the area. It is close to the center of West Hartford. I'm not aware of a lot of other hotels in West Hartford, although other folks may chime in with some suggestions. (Although there are a lot of hotels in Hartford proper).

Although I've certainly seen scams on Craigslist, there is a difference in rental prices between West Hartford (the town) and the west end of Hartford (a neighborhood in Hartford borders West Hartford). It is possible that this might explain some of the price discrepancies you are seeing.

I think most landlords want to see a job before they'll rent to you.

What industry are you in? In most fields "where you'd like to work" might have to choose you instead of you choosing them

The Homewood Suites by the UConn health center is very nice, with free breakfast, and even free dinner on weeknights. The Marriott Courtyard by the Westfarms mall is good, too. So is the Farmington Marriott, but it's a bit more expensive and a bit farther away. Hampton Inn and Suites at 301 Colt Highway in Farmington is newest in the area, very nice. Take a look at trip advisor - reviews of the West Hartford Inn are not that great, but it is right by West Hartford center.

For a place in WH that accepts pets and has in-unit laundry, you'd probably be looking at a floor in a two or three family house, rather than an apartment complex. They're within your budget - about 1400 or so. But usually, people move to the job, rather than move to an area and then look for work, especially in this economy.
