$400k doesn't buy you much house in Norwalk. I should know, I tried recently. In Danbury, Bethel, Brookfield, Newtown, Monroe, Shelton, New Fairfield, Sherman, Stratford and Bridgeport - that's another story.

That's what New Haven is for.

I don't know if I would say it's "surprisingly affordable". I don't think it's affordable by national standards at all. Perhaps for the NYC/Boston metropolitan area. There have been many studies done that show how much it takes to "live" even in the Hartford area, and it's not chump change. The fact that we are calling a 400K house a "deal" is telling in itself of what segment of society we are dealing with.

As for the food, yea kind of light on the delis, but they are here and there...but and bakeries and "good" pizza are all over the place. Don't you go to Pepe's all the time and say it's "fine"?

Depends on where you live I guess. We relocated from Westchester County in NY. That was expensive. The 3br townhouse we bought in CT is a bargain compared to if we bought in NY. A comparative size in NY would have ran us $500-600,000 with taxes from $7500-9000. I find the gas prices the same(still work in NY)food prices are cheaper here among some other things. Everyone is different but for us, we find CT cheaper........but it really depends on where are moving from.

That is why I said good pizza that is close by. Still there are a few places in the Hartford area with good pizza including a branch of Frank Pepe's that is excellent. Jay

The Hartford area is affordable for the northeast. The pay is decent for most professions and home prices in good towns are not high. As for bakeries and pizza there just are not that many good ones around. And yes Pepe's is excellent but it is certainly not that close to many people. Jay

I believe your question was sufficiently answered.
I would not say that Hartford is the cheapest part of the state or that the rest of Connecticut is expensive. I will say that southwestern Connnecticut is the most expensive and then the New Haven and Hartford areas. Outside of those the rest of the state is less expensive. Jay

Tolland County, which the OP is referencing, is the second most affordable county in the state with regards to real estate. I'd say that's one of the cheapest areas in the state, seeing that there are 8 counties.

That's not the case at all, real estate wise, in fact it's the exact opposite. Litchfield County and Middlesex County are priced higher than both New Haven and Hartford County. So the rest of the state outside of Hartford and New Haven would be more expensive than Hartford/New Haven.
