1. Your Danbury line is inaccurate. The New Canaan line branches from Stamford and terminates in New Canaan. The Danbury line branches from South Norwalk and terminates in Danbury (not Litchfield County). There's also the Waterbury line you forgot.

2. Not true on crime. There are lots of very safe communities in CT. Even parts of "dangerous" cities are very safe. Our crime and violence is very isolated in a few bad neighborhoods.

I can't think of any parts of Fairfield that need to be avoided.

Ditto. Well maybe the far east stretch of Route 1. That's kind of a gross part of Fairfield.

I wouldn't say to avoid Norwalk either, just parts of it. It won't have what the OP is looking for in relation to New Haven though and is more expensive.

You've officially lost all credibility IMO.

Just read the local police logs, there is crime in every town.

The point is that the local police logs in Madison will detail car accidents, DUIs, a fight between a mother and daughter, whereas in West Haven you're looking at a book of more serious crimes.

Neither can I. Even the eastern parts of Fairfield along Route 1 is not bad. It may not be shiny new or upscale but it certainly is safe. obviously the person posting this does not know Fairfield at all. Jay

To answer the OP, I agree New Haven may be a good choice. It is centrally located between Boston and New York and it would be about a 45 to 60 minute drive to Hartford.

Another option would be Middletown. It is a small city with a decent downtown with a number of interesting bars and restaurants and a lot of apartments that would meet your needs. You could get a decent 2 bedroom rental for around $1,200 or so. Jay

Middletown is nice, although I will say that the people I know that have lived there did grow tired of the bar/restaurant scene since it's very limited compared to New Haven.

Concentrate your search in New Haven and Stamford. There's more to do in New Haven itself, and it is a bit more affordable, but Stamford is less than an hour from NYC, so it's really easy to spend Saturday nights in the city if you want to be closer to major nightlife.
