I've seen that much snow in Albany, just not all in one storm, but during the course of say January with very little melting.

All those places get more snow overall than the coastal Northeast, but we often get tons of snow in one shot! If you look at the record snowfalls for all the locations you lived in rajmelk, I think even as far south as Philly the record single snowfall is higher than all of them.

Yes, I was referring to single event snowfall for sure. Philly I think had that one monster (28"?) in 2010...but I bet Hartford has had a bunch more 20"+ events on record. Heck, I've experienced 2 just in the last 2 years.

Philly had two storms of 30", in 2010 and 1996......Hartford almost certainly has more 20+" storms but it's also close enough to the coast for me to consider it to be "coastal Northeast" as well so it counts in getting "a lot in one shot" (a lot closer than Albany and actually technically closer than Philly).

I think the extreme snow cover helped Hartford achieve a subzero low temperature today (-4 at Bradley).

I agree with all that. This blizzard dropped a seasons worth of snow "within" 24hrs. That wasn't done in 1978.

Pressure in 1978 was 984. This storm hit 976mb.

Not sure about winds.

I think comparing it to the 1888 blizzard would be a better comparison.

And the reason why we don't see scenes like we do from 1978 with cars buried on the roads is because 1. we have better technology and 2. there is more awareness now thanks to media and social networks and technology. We've got more leeway notice now a days.

Anyone know/want to predict what 91 & the Merritt will be like tomorrow afternoon?? Western Connecticut has a game up @ Keene state (in Keene, NH) tomorrow. I'd like to go because we only have 3 or 4 more games left this season, but obviously I'm not gonna go if my car is going to drive off the side of the road.

This morning in the Hartford area, roads are OK but dicey in spots. Route 2 is two lanes, no shoulder, but suddenly the right lane will disappear, then return. Same on 84. Basically, stay out of the right lane on the highways. Also, some entrance ramps have ZERO line of sight, so people have to stop and inch their way onto the highways, so be mindful of slow cars merging. Intersections on town roads are tough too, with giant snow banks blocking your view. Take your time and edge out slowly, so far everyone was playing nice on the roads today and being patient.

Honestly, the drive this morning wasn't too bad, everyone just needs to be aware that many other motorists can't see well and we all have to be accommodating.

Be careful out on the roads today. Just heard on the police scanner that 91 is being shutdown in Enfield. Highway is a complete sheet of ice.
