Bridgeport extended a contract of a man who has never taught in school but has left New Orleans, Philadelphia and Chicago in shambles while lining the pockets of his own consulting company, cronies and charter school lobbyists. Even though he is not certified to be a superintendent in the state of CT, the state appointed board (which was ruled illegal by the court) ruled in Vallas's favor 5-4. Mr. Vallas's biggest changes are year round testing, hiring of out of state consultants connected to his company, a slew of no-bid contracts and alienating teachers and parents. In the meantime, Bridgeport is preparing for several charter school openings.

Bridgeport superintendent gets 3-year deal - Connecticut Post

I wonder how long it will be before anyone cracks down on Mr. Vallas, the state education secretary or Governor Malloy regarding no bid contracts, funneling of public money to charter schools (which are essentially private schools), and the persistent attempts to destroy the successful public schools in the suburbs and towns. The state already found the education secretary to be in the wrong. But I doubt anything will come of it.

State Auditors determine Education Commissioner Stefan Pryor and the Malloy Administration dodged bidding requirements - Wait, What?

Even though I don't live in Bridgeport, the manipulation and ambition of these "reformers" scares me for my own kids' education. It's bad enough the state is making performing schools play by the same rules as "failing" schools and wasting valuable instruction time.

Because before Mr. Vallas came, Bridgeport had great schools, not needing reform?

Didn't you just state in another thread you'd rather send your kids to one of these "failing" schools over a school like Darien?

Is it the schools or the kids' living situations that need reform? Either way, you're ignoring the faux jobs created and no bid contracts to his own consulting firm he has charged the city.

Just noticed this post. I actually draw the line at Bridgeport, New Haven and Hartford schools but am fine with Stamford and Waterbury schools - probably because I know them a little bit better. But while I'm here:

Haha!!

While Stamford has some issues, comparing it to those other 4 is a bit inaxcurate. It's more of an in between '2nd tier' lumped with Norwalk and Danbury IMHO

Waterbury schools? really? Depends which, I guess.. I believe Wilby was actually decertified for a time.. as in, couldn't award diplomas. Can't get much worse than that.

I'm not aware of that happening at Wilby. As for the other schools, yes I would be fine with them. The SOARs program at Kennedy is quite strong and I've worked with a lot of great kids from the other two high schools. Having said that, anyone needs to be super involved with their kids in order to navigate the junk that comes with inner city students and stay on top of administration during the younger years. Of course parents need to be involved anywhere else, but it's just different stuff to deal with in a city.

Yes, but the high schools still offer far more academically and extracurricularly than most thriving schools outside Fairfield County.

Where are you talking about? If you mean Stamford, I agree with you.
