Where does one hike at Silver Sands? All I've seen there is a boardwalk, beach, and a small island. I can't imagine miles of trails on that little island. I don't remember any trail systems at Sherwood Island, either. Although it's been a few decades since I was there, so that could be why. When I think of hiking though, I expect it to last several hours. I'm not going out for a leisurely stroll when I go hiking.

Didn't say anything about hiking, but they are state parks which the map listed.

Silver Sands expanded the boardwalk to a little over a mile total. It's a very nice walk, but not "hiking".

Don't forget that, after your hike, you have to go over your entire body to see how many Lyme disease ticks you have picked up along the way.

If you stay away from grasses/trees/brush/etc, no worries. If the path is well cleared and you wear proper clothing you're unlikely to pick up a tick.

Yes, that is the one downside to hiking. Wear light clothing, long pants/long sleeves, and I always change clothes and shower immediately afterwards. Some people swear by insect repellent, too. But even at home while sitting on my deck I get ticks crawling on me, and I'm not about to hide away indoors. So far I have never gotten Lyme disease.

Thats another benefit of hiking in the cold weather. Plus like Stylo said, usually on the trails itself there's not an issue. Its when you start getting into the thick of things. Even though they can jump 16 feet (I think) the trails are open and ticks are usually hiding in weeds/shurbs/tall grass/ect

Default Mt Tom

Went hiking Mt Tom yesterday morning. April 3, 2013. Temps in the low 30s but real feel of upper 20s with wind. Partly Cloudy Skies.

Just Patches of snow were on the hills and very little ice.

Easy hike, only took 30 minutes one way using the Yellow trail. All uphill but easy. Some rough terrain with roots/rocks and some spots where you have to do a little rock climbing.

Elevation est. 1300ft.

This was facing SouthWest towards northern Fairfield County

the barkhamsted lighthouse trail in people's state forest is a really nice walk with a nice view at the end. there are foundations, a quarry, and an old cemetery along the way from the village that used to be there.
