Our local hangouts were the mall and movie theater, but we outgrew that and moved on to parking lots and sometimes the woods.

I survived, but it was a dull place to be. Imagine being in Cornwall or Woodstock as a teen? Yikes.
First of all I don't think downtown Danbury is a "dump" at all. It's pretty lively and WestConn is now purchasing buildings to liven it up even more. Downtown Derby can be considered a dump. There is no comparison between the two.

Anyway, of course Woodstock is going to have a different feel than Newtown. That's why I noted "area" in reference to a way of life. A family in Bethel or Brookfield has a very similar way of life to a family in Milford or Stratford. Similarly, a family in Preston has a similar way of life to a family in Stonington. Out in California, someone who lives in Hermosa or Venice lives completely different than someone who lives in Woodland Hills or Glendale. Connecticut's way of life has little variation from town to town.

I guess you really have to live in another region to understand what I'm saying.

Downtown Danbury is dead and full of vacancies (and turnover). It's even gone downhill since the early 2000's when I was in high school. The mall is thriving though.

That was a quick rise and decline wasn't it. Some very cool shops are going into the Marcus Dairy area.
