I'll be graduating from UConn in a few weeks and I have a job interview for a company in Windsor as well as one for a company in Hartford. I'm from New Jersey, but have been living in Storrs, CT for the past four years while at school.

Anyway, what are some good towns/cities near those two places that have affordable rent? Ideally, I want to be within a 30 minute drive to work while paying no more than $1200 a month on rent. I'd also like to live somewhere that doesn't have high crime.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks!

West Hartford if you take the Hartford job. Or the West End of Hartford.

I'll let others chime in re: Windsor.

I agree that West Hartford is a great place for someone just out of college. Manchester will be more affordable but it's a little dull for young people.

I've been looking into West Hartford and a few of my roommates are from there. It looks nice, but would that fit in my price range? I'd be looking to get an apartment instead of renting a house.

Thanks!

Sure, it would. Maybe not in BlueBack Square but certainly in other places. Once you've started looking, come back and tell us -- specifically -- what buildings you're looking at. People can tell you whether or not to consider it.

Good luck!!!

ETA: And GREAT luck on your interviews!

I was actually looking at Manchester!

There are a couple of apartments in Manchester and in a town called Wethersfield that I liked and seem to be a little more "bang for your buck" than some of the apartments I've been looking at in West Hartford.

In fairness, I really haven't visited any of these cities much. I've driven through West Hartford, which looked really nice, but I have no idea what to expect from it. I still haven't been to Manchester and Wethersfield so I really don't know too much about either place, except I know Manchester is a decent size city like West Hartford. I do like that West Hartford seems like a place where you can walk to a bunch of places which is nice, but it wouldn't bother me living in a place where I had to drive to places. I'm already used to that now!

Basically, I just want a place that's close to Hartford/Windsor, that has low crime, has a good number of young professionals, and isn't ridiculously expensive.

I appreciate all the help you guys have given me thus far!

$1200 is totally doable in WH. I agree it's the best option.

I'd throw in a vote for Wethersfield. Doesn't have the walkable downtown that West Hartford has, but it's no more than 10-15 minutes to West Hartford/Hartford, the Berlin Turnpike, and it boasts dozens of restaurants and shops along the Silas Deane (the road that traverses the town North to South). Middletown isn't far either, and it's easily commutable to Hartford or Windsor via I-91. Great, safe town. West Hartford is beautiful too. Can't go wrong in either. Best of luck!

If you're working in Windsor (as I do), it's best to stay west of the river - closer commute and plenty of options. For $1200 a month, you can easily find a nice apartment. Your budget will definitely go further in Newington or Wethersfield, overall great towns with a good number of singles, but there's less to do. Hartford and West Hartford are the way to go. In the capitol city, you've got downtown, the WestSide and some parts of Asylum Hill. Anywhere in WH is fine, but the far southeast part east of New Park Avenue isn't too desireable or nice. No matter where you end up, try to find some group and stay active and involved. If you join a gym, a sports league, a running group, etc I think you'll have a much easier time meeting people. As great as the restaurant and bar scene is up here, it can get old fast if that's all you rely on. There's lots of outdoor recreation worth looking into as well. Good luck!

My one issue I had looking at West Hartford was that all of the apartments I found there looked a bit on the older side, whereas in some of the other towns they were newer had a few more amenities. But then again, West Hartford seems to be the place to be.

On a side note, I'd prefer to not live in the actual city of Hartford. I'm not really interested in living anywhere that urban.

I'm probably being really picky now that I think about it, LOL.
