When my wife and I moved here from NY and went to Bridgeport DMV, it took over 6 hours of surrendering plates, registering the car and getting new ID'S. I am familiar with how bad DMV's are as the ones in NY make Bridgeport look pleasurable. So my wife had a NY permit as she was in the process of getting her license but had to surrender it for a CT ID. We ran out of time that day to even attempt the permit test line. Also, not one person at the DMV bothered to tell us that over the age of 18 you didnt need a permit to practice driving.I wish we would have known that! I only found this out last summer but obviously they changed that in January. We didnt know, in NY you need a permit no matter what age. Okay, enough with all that......

Is there a faster, less crowded and nicer person DMV that we can go to? Or am I asking the impossible?

Every new driver needs a permit first, in CT now: DMV: Driver's License - 18 or Older - Obtaining.

I've found Norwalk DMV to be infinitely better than Bridgeport. YMMV.

If you don't mind the drive, Willimantic is a breeze. In and out, literally.

Check with your local AAA office and see if they can help you. Our AAA has a section that provides many DMV services, with much better customer service.

Yes, I have found Norwalk to be a lot better than Bridgeport. Bridgeport is an absolute nightmare.

Pretty much any location will be better than Bridgeport. You may also give Hamden a shot.

I was at the New Britain DMV in early December to pay the taxes on my mother's car (on her behalf, since she wasn't feeling well that day). I was in there for the slightest bit over an hour. Unless I read wrong, I swear that branch was supposed to close at one time. Thank goodness it didn't, since the headquarters in Wethersfield would've been a huge hassle (New Britain's is the far west end, very close to the Plainville town line).

I have found the Old Saybrook DMV to be the best kept secret in CT. Rarely any lines and even when there are "lines" you get to sit down with a number rather than actually stand in line.

Out of all the ones I've been to, here's how they rank from best to worst: Danbury, Hamden, Norwalk, Bridgeport.

For registration/license renewals or other minor things, I go to the Milford DMV office. Never takes more than a few minutes.

I was going to mention this one as well, but i figured it was too far away for the OP.
