Tomorrow I will be driving up to New Haven to explore Yale University for my son to go there. I also want to see some colleges around Boston area as well, so I was wondering the best route out of 3 to get to Boston from New Haven? I will be driving up around 11:00am in 2 days, and I noticed 3 routes availible. Which route do you think would be the best:

Option 1: I-91 N < I-84 E < I-90 E to Boston

Option 2: I-95 N all the way < I-93 N to Boston

Option 3: I-95 N < I-395 N < I-90 E to Boston

I am leaning towards option 2 because its along the coast and I get to go through Rhode Island, but which would be the best out of 3. I have gotten delayed 2 hours in Sturbridge on a saturday and sunday last summer, so I am not really pro option 1, but which one would you take?

Shouldn't really matter on a Sunday, and most of the holiday traffic has already passed. The only traffic will be from construction or accidents.

In the summer, it can be a different story.

Be sure to take the free Yale campus walking tour: http://www.yale.edu/visitor/tours.html

Lots of good food in New Haven, but the trip wouldn't be complete without trying the pizza. Pepe's, Sally's, Modern, or BAR. BAR is the closest to the campus.

And check out the Art Museum. It's free and pretty spectacular.

I drive all 3 routes, altho usually just your Options 1 or 2. Option 3 is a little slower and while there's no traffic on I395 there always seem to be a ton of police speedtraps!

Option 1 is marginally quicker, assuming no holdups.

Option 2 I sometimes drive for a change of scenery, and I do like the view over the CT River. I avoid that route depending on the time if the Pats have a home game at Gillette tho.

I've done all 3 but would recommend 1 or 3 over 2. I don't like driving through Providence at all. I currently live where the CT river meets the sound and use option 3 most. When I lived in the Waterbury area, I would take 84-691-91-84-90 (to avoid downtown Hartford) most.

Well if Providence is a mess, I could take I-295 around providence, how is that?

Good grief, Providence is not a mess and it is quite a bit out of the way to take 295. Besides, if you have a hankering for a cabinet, Providence is the place.

You want to take option 1. There really is very little debate.

I don't think Providence is a mess, I personally don't like driving through it.
