Hi all, just signed up today to get your opinion.

A little background on myself:

I'm looking to buy a single family house (as I recently got married). I do have a car, and work around Wall st. Currently I live in queens and it takes me an hour to get to work...I'm a Chiropractor, and have had few patients that live in CT and commute to NYC and it takes them no longer then hour from door-to-door.

So my question is, which cities do I want to look into to accommodate my travel time, and also want to make sure that it has a very good school district (so I do not have to move once we have children)?

Any help would be appreciated,

Thank you,

Dr. Patel

EDIT: My commute to work will be via public transportation not my car!

It depends on your budget. The closest town to Manhattan in CT is Greenwich, so I would start your search there. However the home prices are very high. Other towns in the area to consider are Darien and New Canaan, but that will be pushing the hour to Wall St. I think even Greenwich would be over an hour.

It will take more than an hour to get to Wall Street from anywhere in Connecticut. I am not sure who told you it wouldn't. The closest town is Greenwich which is an excellent place to live but pricey. What is your budget? You would catch the Metro-North train to Grand Central and then switch to a subway to get downtown. Figure 10 to 15 minutes from your house to the train. The train trip is about 50 minutes and the subway is somethignlike 20 minutes. In total the trip would likely take just over an hour and 15 minutes or so. Jay

Congrats on your marriage, and welcome to CT, if you do move.

I agree - by public transportation, even Greenwich is a stretch to make it to Wall Street in an hour. If it was right outside Grand Central Station (in central Mahattan), then you can make it in an hour or so. But, you'd then need to make the distance to Wall Street (lower Manhattan)

Maybe somewhere in Westchester, like Mamaroneck would be do-able in an hour?

thanks for the replies guys...yea i just google maped stamford, and greenwich CT and both of them are over an hour, but not by much. I'm checking out trulia to get an idea of the houses that fit my budget ($300k - $400k) and its not looking too good this is going to be my first house purchase so I'm def. excited about that. Will have to find nice properties. Any other cities I can consider if I stretch my commute time by a little bit more?

Unfortunately 300-400k in the area you're looking would only get you a condo, if that. You might want to check out some towns in New Jersey - can't hurt to post on that board as well.

NJ does have higher property taxes, but there are a few more affordable towns commutable to Wall St than there are in CT.
