Reading through the website, the I believe the tuition on the Greenwich website is for two things.

The first is for the pre K program.

The second is for the summer school programs. Summer school is elective programs and for students who had trouble with a course during the school year.

Regular September to June kindergarten through grade 12 is free for town residents.

That's not actually true. Not all towns offer it and most that do only offer it to children of town employees.

If someone does decide to do this though, I would think twice about it. While having the option to send a kid to school in Greenwich or Ridgefield sounds very appealing, the logistics of the travel and after school involvement need to be considered. I know a few people who have tried this and only one was successful because it was an only child situation where they pretty much used the home overnight and eventually moved to the town the school was in. If you take a kid out of their local schools, you are kind of separating them from the community. Yet it's difficult to get involved in the town you go to school in if you are heading home with your parents after work (everyone I knew who tried this was a school employee). So a consequence may be that your alienating your child both from school mates and neighborhood kids.
