Probably a dumb question, but would you apply to work for the State? There is several positions in my current field with the State. I am a bit hesitant with the current turmoil and layoffs going off. I thought the State was in a freeze.

Anyone know how bad stability and security is at the state level for employment?

Appreciate the feedback.

No because you'll have a high probability of being laid off. With a state economy of always being unpredictable, there's a chance there will be more lay offs in the future. State employees do however, get paid very well and have good benefits. If you know for a fact that your job will be protected then go ahead, I'd give it a try. However...As a taxpayer, I will definitely like to see less benefits and less pay instead of lay offs especially with the budget crisis we're in but I don't think that'll happen. Politicians (for the most part) wouldn't agree and vote in less pay for themselves.

When it comes to layoffs, it's "last in, first out." So the newbies have it the worst.

DCF is very stressful. Will you be tasked with removing children from abusive homes?

Go for it. You can easily get laid off from most any job. Get that pension if they still offer one.

Are you a nurse? If so, keep your eye on UConn Health's postings. DCF - don't be surprised if you are hired now that they just laid a ton off, then are let go when (if - but basing it on history) they call back those laid off.

I can tell you from experience, the more senior Union guys will let layoffs happen rather than take a hit in pay and bennies

That's what I am concerned about. No i am a counselor working on my way to nursing, more money/more opportunities, in school doing the prerequisites.
