A lot has already been said, I'll chime in with my own experience:
Our son (18 months) goes to Child's World Academy which is near where Rt 25 and 59 intersect. It is a Center type daycare and we both love how much focus they put on teaching the kids even at the early toddler level, we can see the positive effect it has on him.
Restaurants in the area are indeed of surprisingly high quality. Carl Anthony's has great Pizza. Tavern has good Grill/BBQ. A new restaurant in Newtown, Dere Street, has great european style food. You're also close enough to Milford, Bridgeport, and fairfield to do an evening getaway at the places there.
As far as commuting, avoid the Merritt Parkway as much as possible, depending where you'll work. I take a route through Easton and Westport that gets me on at exit 42 and cuts a lot of time off my trip.
Stuff for kids to do: Wolfe Park and Great Hollow are both great and have playgrounds for kids of various ages. There's a trampoline park just over the border in trumbull. The public library has a nicely set up kids section taking up a whole floor with computers, puzzles, blocks and a train table. There's a small children's museum close by in newtown called EverWonder which has been our go-to on rainy weekend days when our son is climbing the walls. Jones Family farm has fruit picking through the summer and pumpkins in the fall. There's a Tumble Jungle in newtown which we'll also be looking into when the pools close.

I believe you take Route 136 which starts at Route 59 in Easton and goes to Westport just south of Exit 42. That would cut out the traffic in Trumbull and Fairfield on the Merritt. Jay

Correct, Rt 136. However that artist lady made a good point. If they live in the Stephenson area Route 34 to somewhere might be easier. Should have bought in southern Monroe.

Going Route 34 would be back-tracking if your destination is Stamford/Norwalk. It connects Newtown to New Haven so it is going southeast when the OP wants to go Southwest. Route 34 does connect to Route 8 in Derby but that puts them even further east than Route 25 would. Your Route 136 recommendation is good otherwise they should then use Route 25 to the parkway. Jay

Of course, should have said Rt 34 would be easier to NH area.
Rt 136 for a possible job in Westport and below (much easier from southern Monroe-Hattertown area), but getting to 136 from Stephenson area would be navigating some backroads through town.

This. To get from Stevenson to Hattertown/Rt59 would take at least 10-15 minutes.
