Rent? Yes.

Do you have kids? How many rooms are you looking for?

The different parts of town have very different housing stock, I could probably point you in a good direction.

It is doable but likely a more modest home like a cape or ranch of 1,200 to 1,500 square feet. Jay

I do have little kids that aren't in school yet. Would like some place that feeds into good schools, with 3+ rooms. Everything has basements correct? I could use that for a office so an extra room may not be needed. Or point me towards other towns nearby that might be worth checking out.

All the schools in Fairfield are superb so there's no worries there, my question was gauged to see how much space you'd be looking for pretty much. Just did a quick search and it looks like there's a few in the "Lake Hills" portion of town for your budget, the living space may be a little on the small side of what you're used to (many of the houses are old stock houses but most are up to current standards) but there's a decent amount of shady lawns and a great beach lake for the little ones right in the area as well as a great walking trail called the cascades.

Most houses in the Northeast have basements, but not all of them are finished or have egress to the outside.

As others have mentioned may want to take a quick zillow/realtor look in Trumbull, it would only add about 10minutes to the train for a commute but it is also a wonderful fairly affordable town to rent in.

Good, but the commute is not. It'll take you 50 minutes to an hour on average with the traffic.

You'll be fine. You will find your happy place but i think it depends on whether you prefer urban, country or maybe you want some coastline in your life.

I forget if you need to be near stamford or just like the idea but if cost of living is important; i would look towards hartford/new haven counties. I've said this a million X but west hartford is one of my favorites due to its' affordability relative to your quality of life (even though some think it's $$$, you get a lot).

Glastonbury is a beautiful town with loads of open space yet a lot to do.

Or maybe Orange, trumbull or Milford if you want to be closer to Stamford yet outside of New Haven (which the coolest city CT offers).

The town of Fairfield is priced right IMO. It's not cheap but it isn't too overpriced and you get a lot for your money if you choose it.

Austin is a short flight away and isn't going anywhere should you want to return.

GL,
