You post is not off topic.

Healthcare for seniors is extremely important. Many times people don't realize how important it is until they get sick in retirement in their later years. They then realize that some of the southern areas that they live in are not anything like the hospitals in the NYC area or other major urban areas.

One of the major reasons I am staying in CT is because I have Crohn's Disease. I have had five major operations and I need to be near top notch surgeons. I have had 4 surgeries at Mount Sinai in NYC and one at Yale New Haven Hospital. I am still alive because of the high level of health care in the greater NYC area.

For me Mount Sinai is in the top ten at #9 and Yale is #39 in the entire country and those odds are pretty damn good at keeping me alive.

If I could afford it somehow for even two or three months in the worst winter CT months is to be a snowbird in Jacksonville FL where the hospital is #12.....nowhere else.

BTW is you do come to this area there is the Hospital for Special Surgery in NYC but they also have a location in Stamford CT. People come from all over the world for orthopedic surgery at the HSS.

Thanks, CtArtist!
I appreciate your positive feedback on CT healthcare. I agree that the topic of healthcare for seniors is not off topic but actually in line with how to choose retirement areas. Affordable/safe housing and excellent health are both crucial in my book. I'm glad to hear you've received the best care for your condition and continue to thrive. That's wonderful.
As a breast cancer patient who is hopefully done with the more active part of treatment but still monitored by an oncologist for meds, I will need follow-up. My oncologist here knows docs at Yale-New Haven and will make a referral there when I move.

I'm aware of HSS and its stellar reputation for knee replacement. If I was there already, I'd absolutely choose them. It now depends on timing and whether I want to get the surgery over with to make a move easier. I have decisions to make.
All the great info I'm being offered here truly helps so thanks CTArtist and everyone who has responded!

PittsburghPatty,

Every time I go and see my brother play in the New Haven area I will give you an update and this is a good one.

My brother played at a place in West Haven called Biagetti's out on the patio. It was a very good singles/married scene for someone in their 40's to 60's. We all had a good time. The band played from 7:30 to 10:45 which is good for our age group. This restaurant is about a block from the water. I had never been there.

Now I don't recommend moving to West Haven itself (but other might) but I just wanted to tell you about the singles scene in the New Haven area.

My brother also played at a place called Stonebridge in Milford a few weeks ago out on their patio with a different band. They played from about 5:00 to 9:00 and that was also a nice time for our age group of 40's to 60's. The restaurant is awesome inside and out. That is also pretty close to the water and right near the train station.

I am sorry if I already posted this on here. I don't see it in this thread. I might have posted it in another thread that my brother played at Stonebridge.

I just found it but it was kind of buried in another post on here so I will leave this up for all the other singles looking to have a good time in the New Haven area because Stonebridge is OUTSTANDING!

Yeah, definitely a good crowd up until about 9PM. Then it gets super young, crowded, and the bros and woo girls come out.

Hi All:
I continue to keep my eye out for my new home in CT as my mom's estate settlement issues in Pa come to a close. Although I see some single family new construction homes in the Milford, Branford, Guilford, areas, and many older condos for sale-- I do not see new construction condo developments aside from one on Boston Post Rd in Madison that has a 1 bedroom for sale in the mid-300,000's. I also saw a new condo development there with condo's in the mid 500,000;s and they had no garage. Yikes. The condo development on High Street in Guilford is WAY out of my price range also. It looks like the target sales audience for condo living is leaving the state, hence the dearth for new build condos.

My preference is for a new construction condo, 2-3 bedroom, one floor living or at least a master on the first floor and under $400,000 if at all possible. I want to be reasonably close to Yale New Haven Hospital for medical care and convenient to restaurants and some social venues.
Does anyone know if there are any plans to build what I'm looking for by 2020? I'm about to give up on Connecticut. Thanks for your continued help.
Patty

There are several new construction 55+ developments in Oxford, 30 minutes northwest of New Haven. I see a lot of closed real estate transactions in those neighborhoods from the low $300s to mid $400s. Oxford is not much like Branford, it is obviously not on the coast and definitely more rural, but it has low taxes, and there is shopping in town and dining in neighboring towns.

You are right, there is hardly any new condos in these towns. That is because they are mature communities with little available land to build new condos on. You may have to consider buying an existing unit and remodeling it.

I have a friend that bought a unit at Oronoque Village in Stratford. She bought it relatively cheap, gutted the place and brought it into the 21st Century. It’s beautiful with mature landscaping overlooking the golf course. It has a wonderful clubhouse which she loves. You might consider doing that. Jay

There are very few new construction condos. As Jay said there’s less developable land and in places like Milford builders, when not creating rentals, are focusing on new construction single family homes. They are still building new condos at Walnut Beach, but it’s almost done.

This is one that sold: https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/3...82405871_zpid/

You’d be best off talking to an agent as they’ll have the scoop on something like that.

I was going to suggest the Old Lyme/Old Saybrook area myself. Low property tax rates in both towns and a decent variety of housing stock - from very expensive to more modestly priced. you're right at the end of Route 9, so you can shoot up to Middletown or Hartford fairly easily, and you have the casinos 20 minutes to the east and the outlet malls not too far to the West.

Summer beach goers typically go to Rocky Neck in nearby East Lyme or Hammonasset in nearby Madison, but both towns have town beaches that can get pretty busy in the warmer months
