People quoting experts aren't being logical?

People using intution and hunches are?

What?

If they don’t understand the limits to the data or even the data itself then no they aren’t being logical.

My mom was in the Bridgeport ER last week. She went in with cold and flu symptoms. At that time even though she was elderly they made it a point of telling us my mom WOULD NOT be getting the Coronavirus test.

The day my mom was in the ER there was only 600 tests in the entire state of CT. I believe CT only has 1200 testing kits right now. Let's face it they are rationing the test right now. My mom was diagnosed with Viral Gastroenteritis. If my mom where to develop breathing problems then they would have tested her for the Coronavirus.

I bet if they had enough tests to test all the people in the ER that day that had cold and flu symptoms there would be quite a few that actually had the Coronavirus. The more people that are identified actually having the virus the death rate in the US would most likely go lower.

Think about that......1200 test kits in the entire state or over 3 million people.

"As of Thursday morning, the state’s public health lab in Rocky Hill had completed just 90 of the 1,200 tests it has received from the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention...........“That’s horrible. We are vastly, vastly, vastly under-testing at this point,” Dr. Howard P. Forman, director of the health care management program at Yale School of Public Health, said Wednesday. “Without testing, you don’t know what prevalence of disease you have in the community.”

I feel like I got a glimpse into WHAT IS NOT HAPPENING by way of testing when I was with my mom in the ER last week. And because I saw and heard these things myself first hand I am very worried.

BTW, my mom was in the ER hallway for 12 hours that day because they were so overwhelmed with patients no doubt who are worried about the Coronavirus. I don't now how our healthcare system in this area will be able to deal with all the potential Coronavirus patients if the entire state only had a handful of identified people with the C-virus the day my mom was in the ER and in that hallway for 12 hours.

Exactly. If we aren’t testing even half those who exhibit symptoms, it’s going to lead to inaccurate numbers. To take percentages as fact when it’s well known there are many missing variables is irresponsible and illogical. This stuff isn’t rocket science.

You’re right, and that’s why people need not panic. As I mentioned earlier in this thread, panic leads to catastrophic results. There’s a reason medical professionals are telling symptomatic people to stay home. It’s not as lethal as many believe and why bother when treatment will be over the counter medication?

So closing Schools, reducing contact, working from home, avoiding gyms, concerts, any big gathering will help flatten the curve so our HC system is not overwhelmed.

The flip side.....imagine the hospitals had infinite supply of test kits.
Everyone who coughed might overwhelm the ER like they were giving away free toilet paper!

They would have to change the system to accommodate that I fear.

Current mortality rate worldwide as a portion of solved cases is 7%.

Current mortality rate over all cases is 4%.

No one is simply taking these numbers and running with them.

The models being discussed take into account the gaps in data and the likelyhood of further unconfirmed cases that aren't being counted.

We all understand this.

There is still a lot of unknown in this, which all of the foremost experts will concur with.

At the same time its pretty absurd to take the position that this is no big deal based on nothing but wild conjecture and then accuse anyone who is concerned about this hysteric.

There is a big difference between genuine concern and prepping for doomsday. Several posters here were making doomsday like statements and stating that panic isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

Amen. Being hysterical hardly helps the situation.

Being rational is of the utmost importance at this time.
