Hi there,

I'm moving to Hartford area in late June / early July to start working in downtown Hartford (City Place). I plan to get a car and don't mind spending ~$1000 / month for a nice app't. If I can get a nice place for less, that's a bonus.

I'm curious what the locals recommend in terms of good areas to live in.

I'm single, in my late 20s, so things like a good school or a big backyard are non-issues. All I'm looking for is having a nice app't in a good neighborhood. Having trails and some food stores / bars / restaurants within walking distance or a few minute drive would be a plus.

I got an impression that there isn't a whole lot to do downtown but that's just my impression.

Also, I heard that Manchester is a nice place - close to shopping, outdoor trails, and about 15 min drive from downtown Hartford.

What do you guys recommend? Thanks.

Downtown Hartford might be perfect for you- but rents in some of the newest places like 'Hartford 21' and apartments in older historic buildings that where part of the cities business past are going to cost over a Grand a month.

Another option is West Hartford- which is very popular with people; its center with fine shops and restaurants is very pleasing to many new residents.

I would say Manchester or West Hartford. Both easy commutes in, you'll get a newer nicer apartment for the money in Manchester, though West Hartford has a great walkable center. Both have some great trails for biking/hiking. Case Mountain (I use Mountain lightly) has some of the best trails in the area and in West Hartford you have miles of trails on watershed land.

Thanks. That's 2 votes for West Hartford. I'll definitely keep it high on my list.
The walkable center and the trails sound great.

Any comments on the other cities / municipalities around Hartford like Windsor, South Windsor, Avon, Glastonbury, East Hartford, Bloomfield?

Also, any neighborhoods (other than downtown) in Hartford itself worth considering?
Or the nearby cities are usually better in terms of cost of living and safety?

Thanks a lot.
