As a new haven resident, I can tell you that I find it more convenient to park in Milford and take the train from there rather than New Haven. Plus, parking is free, safe, and convenient on the weekends - the spots are right near the platform.

Taking Metro North really isn't that much longer. Hartford to NYC in 2 hours? No way, not on the weekends either.

Take Metro North from New Haven or Milford. All you need is one fender bender on 95 and you are stuck in a sea of cars.

Hartford to New York without traffic (and on Sunday the highway will be fairly empty) will take 2 hours 15 minutes max. I used to travel from Canton to the UWS every Sunday for family dinner - it took about 2 hours going about 70 mph.

I-84 west to Danbury and south on I-684 has signficantly less traffic than the Merritt or I-95.

Two+ hours is a typical Hartford-NYC drive time. Amtrak does take closer to 3 hours, unfortunately.
