you're correct, a two lane highway is one lane going in each direction. there are very few two lane highways in CT.

The merritt is a 4 lane express way.

Should have said "2-lane HWY in each dir." or something similiar.

But I did make note that there was a r land and a l lane in the first two sentences.

I thought in Connecticut, the rule was to put your foot to the floor to close the gap so the car in front of you trying to move left and pass is boxed in? Therefore, there is never a “safe” time to signal and change lanes to the left to pass. With that driving style, the proper move is to wait for the expensive luxury sedan or crossover and cut them off because they won’t want to ding their car. To prevent them from jamming their foot to the floor to close the gap, you don’t signal until you’re already halfway into the left lane. And don’t worry about the inevitable horn from the entitled driver.

I always understood highway lane numbering to be in one direction so I think you were fine. If you're on a two-lane highway you have two lanes to choose from, the other direction is moot. Others may vary
